BEAVER FALLS, Pa.- Geneva recognized the accomplishments and community service of three alumni with the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) at its annual alumni dinner.

Dr. Lois Tyson ‘55 Cummings, of Athens, Georgia, is being honored with a Distinguished Service Award for her service to academic education and the church.

Dr. Cummings graduated in 1949 from Beaver Falls High School and attended Bob Jones University. She graduated with a certificate in Christian Education in 1952 and worked as a Bible teacher in Vermont until 1954, before attending Geneva College. After graduating from Geneva in 1955 with a degree in Elementary Education, she married Buhl Cummings, and both worked in Korea as short-term missionaries. In 1956, they moved to Athens, GA where they started a Bible book store, a non-denominational youth outreach, and a weekly radio program.

In 1970, Drs. Cummings founded Athens Christian School. The non-denominational school began with 125 students and has grown to a K-12 school on a 54-acre campus with over 700 students. The school is now an accredited, college-preparatory school, known state-wide for its excellence in academic, music, and athletic programs.

Currently, Lois is the academic advisor and Buhl is the headmaster of Athens Christian School. Drs. Cummings also have three children and ten grandchildren.

Paul W. Haynie ′70 is being recognized by Geneva College with the Distinguished Service Award for his service to business and the community.

In 1946, Haynie graduated from Freedom High School and began a 41 year career in banking. He started as a bank bookkeeper and was eventually elevated to an executive officer position and was elected to serve on the bank's Board of Directors. Haynie was also the past president and member the Beaver County Chapter, American Institute of Banking; past president and member of Pittsburgh Chapter, Bank Administration Institute; and board member of the Bankers Club of Pittsburgh.

Haynie has also served on the local American Red Cross and the YMCA Boards of Directors He served in the infantry from 1951-53, which included one year in Korea. Haynie served as a Sunday School teacher, church treasurer, member of the church board of trustees, and is an ordained elder.

After 17 years of night classes, Haynie graduated from Geneva in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and now wears his class ring with obvious pride. Since 1990, he has been a volunteer for the Institutional Advancement office.

He and his wife, Elaine, have two children, Terry and Linda, and four grandchildren.
