Pittsburgh, PA – Geneva′s volleyball team seemed to have everything well in hand with a two games to none lead and all the momentum against a depleted Point Park team on Tuesday night. That is, however, why they make you win three games. The momentum switched after Point Park took game three and the Pioneers ended up rallying to shock Geneva for a 3-2 decision.
Point Park was forced to cancel three matches in New York over the weekend because of injuries and team suspensions. With the injured players back in the line-up on Tuesday, the Pioneers found a way to pick up its sixth victory of the season and move to 6-4 overall. Meanwhile, the Golden Tornadoes fell to 5-5 overall, including a 2-2 mark within the AMC North.
Geneva cruised to victories in games one and two and allowed Point Park only a total of 38 points in those games. Despite several chances to put the Pioneers away, Geneva watched Point Park rally to take game three 30-28. After winning game four, Point Park held on for a dramatic 15-13 win in the fifth and deciding game. The five game match was Geneva′s fourth in ten matches this year, including three in the last five matches.
Marisa Barickman led the offense for Geneva with 18 kills and she also added four blocks. Barickman was one of four Geneva players to have at least eight kills in the loss. Megan Summers added eight throw downs and six blocks.
Caryn Azure had a team best 44 assists, while Faith Guerra led Geneva with 20 digs on the night.
The Golden Tornadoes will be back in action this weekend when they will participate in the Carnegie Mellon University Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Geneva′s next conference match will be at Carlow University next Wednesday night.
