Chicago, IL - Geneva′s men′s basketball team traveled far from home this weekend and their misfortune made the trip with them on Friday. Geneva fell to 1-1 on the young season with an 84-69 loss to Purdue North Central. A combination of injuries, foul trouble and an inability to make open shots cost the Golden Tornadoes in just their second game of the season.
Brian Hill, the fantastic freshman that sparked Geneva with 18 points in his collegiate debut on Wednesday, last just 2 ½ minutes on Friday before suffering a severe ankle sprain. Hill will be forced to miss Geneva′s game with East West University on Saturday. With Hill′s shooting ability sidelined for the majority of the game, the Golden Tornadoes struggled from the perimeter. Geneva was just 3-12 from three-point range and was just 22-55 (33%) from the field.
The dynamic post duo of Greg McDivitt and Kyle McDermott was strapped with early foul trouble which allowed them to play just 20 and 19 minutes each respectively. While Geneva was struggling to put the ball in the hole, PNC was sizzling from the floor. Purdue shot 60% from the field in the first 20 minutes while opening up a 45-33 lead at the intermission. For the game, PNC shot 57% from the field, including 46% from outside the three-point arch.
Despite trailing for most of the night, Geneva rallied and cut the deficit to just three points with just under eight minutes remaining, but could get no closer.
Greg McDivitt and Jermaine Ferguson finished the night with a team best 16 points in the loss.
Geneva will have less than 24 hours to recover from its first loss of the season as it will go up against East-West University, IL on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes will return to Beaver Falls next for their home opener against Ohio University-Eastern a week from Saturday.
