Geneva has certainly had its problems with St. Vincent over the years and Saturday′s victory was just the 10th for Geneva in 53 tries in the all-time series. In Saturday′s game, the Golden Tornadoes took the lead from the start and never trailed. Making good on their first six field goal attempts, Geneva opened up a double digit lead midway through the first half and would never relinquish that advantage.
Leading by as many as 23 points in the second half, Geneva watched St. Vincent get back to within 12 points in the final minutes, but the Bearcats could claw no closer.
Geneva opened up a 43-29 halftime lead on the strength of 56% shooting from the field and a decisive rebounding edge. For the game, Geneva out rebounded St. Vincent 43-28, including a team high 13 boards from Allyson Clarke. Clarke led Geneva with 15 points in notching her second double-double of the young season. Renee Rawding added 11 points and Jackie Anthony chipped in with ten to help Geneva′s cause.
Laura Klimchock led all scorers with 23 points, while Lauren Reilly helped St. Vincent with ten points and seven rebounds.
"St. Vincent has always been a tough opponent for us and for everyone they play," said head coach Ron Galbreath. "We take great pride in protecting our home court and it was nice to see such a strong effort in our first home game of the season. I was very pleased with our offensive execution and our toughness on the boards. This was a nice win for our program."
Geneva will travel to Grove City College on Wednesday before retuning to Metheny Fieldhouse next Saturday night to host Seton Hill University.
