Pittsburgh, PA – Coaches will tell you it′s never easy to win on the road, especially within the conference. On Thursday night, Geneva′s women′s basketball team had anything but an easy time against a stingy Point Park team. The Golden Tornadoes, however, pulled out a 68-65 victory to move to 7-1 in the AMC North and maintain its second place status in the division. Overall, Geneva improved to 14-3, while the Pioneers fell to 7-12 and 1-6 in the AMC North.
Geneva got off to a great start by scoring 15 of the game′s first 18 points. Holding a 15-3 advantage just five minutes into the game, the Golden Tornadoes allowed Point Park to rally back into the game. In fact, in the final 15 minutes of the first half, Point Park out scored Geneva by 18 points and took a 35-29 lead into the locker room.
The Golden Tornadoes quickly turned the tables and opened up their own 6-point lead just five minutes into the second half. Point Park could never regain the lead and Geneva held on down the stretch for a three-point victory.
Led once again by the play of Allyson Clarke, the junior scored a team high 19 points while pulling down 15 rebounds. With back to back double-doubles, Clarke now has nine double-doubles for the season. Clarke got a lot of help from her friends as Renee Rawding added 12 points and Jackie Anthony chipped in with 11 points. Senior Kylee Kittner scored all eight of her points in a critical two minute stretch of the second half to help Geneva hold its lead.
Geneva shot 52% from the field in the second half and held the Pioneers to under 30% in the final 20 minutes.
The Golden Tornadoes will host Ursuline College at Metheny Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon with the tip-off scheduled for 1:00 pm.
