Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva head coach Jeff Santarsiero has been waiting for this night for several months. The Golden Tornadoes leader has seen his team struggle from the field for much of the season, but on Tuesday night, Geneva found its stroke and sizzled to a 98-79 non-conference victory over Myers University. Putting together its first four-game win streak of the season, the Golden Tornadoes improved to 13-12 on the year.
As a team, Geneva shot an incredible 65% (37-57) from the field, including a 12-20 effort from three-point range. Geneva′s top three-point shooter coming into the game, Bryan Hill, didn′t even dress after suffering effects from a hard fall in the Saturday game against Seton Hill. "We needed some other guys to step up and score the basketball and we got great contributions from several people tonight," said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. The Golden Tornadoes had six players reach double figures led by Greg McDivitt′s 19 points. Ryan Burns and Mike Ross played huge roles in the victory with 17 and 11 points respectively, including a combined eight three point field goals.
With 7:21 remaining in the first half, Geneva led by just two points but finished the half on a 21-8 run to extend the lead to 15 points. The second half was much of the same with the Golden Tornadoes offense clicking on all cylinders. "Offense can certainly be contagious and we saw a glimpse of that tonight," said Santarsiero. "When guys are confident it makes the game a whole lot of fun and we certainly had some fun tonight."
Hopefully the fun can continue for Santarsiero and the Golden Tornadoes as they will now hit a very tough stretch of games to close out the regular season. Just one game out of third place and a potential first-round home game in the play-offs, Geneva will travel to New York this weekend for games at Houghton and Roberts Wesleyan. Next week, Geneva will visit Notre Dame before closing out the regular season on February 17th at home against Daemen College.
