Tennis Anyone, Geneva Opens 2007 Campaign With Tough Loss

Erie, PA - It felt like spring had come early as Geneva′s women′s tennis team opened its 2007 season against Penn State-Behrend, all be it indoors. Geneva dropped a hard fought 5-4 decision as it was the Golden Tornadoes′ newcomers who almost led Geneva to an opening season victory.

Geneva didn′t fair particularly well in the early singles matches. In fact, Geneva dropped singles matches 1-3, including a 6-4, 6-3 loss from Jill Halama in the number one single spot. Halama, playing against Allison Mudrey, the 2006 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference MVP from a year ago, battled throughout the match, but came up short.

The Golden Tornadoes managed to even the match after the six single matches with victories from Tess Roholt (6-4, 6-2), Julia Buck (6-4, 6-0) and Beth Sweatman (6-0, 6-1).

The doubles competition proved to be the difference in the match as Geneva dropped two of three matches. Freshman Tess Roholt and junior Beth Sweatman teamed up for their second victories of the day, but an 8-5 loss from Anna Buckwalter and Julia Buck was Geneva′s last chance to pull out a victory.

The tennis team will travel to North Greenville, SC next week for its annual spring break trip. The Golden Tornadoes will face Emmanuel College next Saturday for their next on court action.
