Joseph Lowery, who was scheduled to speak at Geneva College on Thursday, April 12th and Friday, April 13th&#160; about his experience and perspective on the civil rights movement, will not be able to speak due to illness. &#160;Dave Guthrie, academic dean at Geneva, said that he hopes to reschedule the lecture for a future date.&#160;\nIn 1957, Rev. Lowery and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Rev. Lowery is also a co-founder and former president of the Black Leadership Forum, a consortium of black advocacy groups. The Forum began protesting apartheid in South Africa in the mid-1970s and continued until the election of Nelson Mandela.\nRev. Lowery&#8242;s lecture at Geneva is part of the college&#8242;s Colloquia Series, which is designed to encourage dialogue within the campus and community on socio-cultural, political, scientific, economic, religious, educational, and literary concepts and practices.\nGeneva College, a reformed Christian liberal arts school founded in 1848, prepares students to serve Christ in all areas of society: work, family and the church.&#160; Geneva is a founding member of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU).","author":null,"publishDate":"2007-04-10","type":"News Release","title":"April 10, 2007","imageDesc":"","url":"/article/io_1176228147053","blogCategories":"","id":"8b378dd10a1504317d582674fb5ec86f","detailUrl":"/news/2007/04/io_1176228147053.json","sourcePath":null,"slug":"io_1176228147053"}}
