NCCAA Eastern Regional Tied, Clincher Set for Saturday

Mt. Vernon, OH - Geneva′s softball team had its back against the wall in its best of three series against host Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Friday afternoon at the NCCAA Eastern regional. After dropping game one by the score of 3-1, the Golden Tornadoes responded with a 2-1 victory in game two. With the series tied a 1-1, Geneva and Mt. Vernon will play the decisive game three on Saturday morning. Geneva moved its overall record to 22-17 for the season. The winner of the Eastern Regional series will move on to the NCCAA national tournament at Indiana Wesleyan next weekend.

Ashley Archer turned in another solid pitching performance in game one, but came away with a tough loss. With Mt. Vernon leading 1-0, Geneva knotted the score on a Marisa Barickman RBI single in the sixth inning. Mt. Vernon came right back with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth for the victory. Barickman had two of Geneva′s seven base hits in game one.

Game two was also dominated by pitching with Geneva′s Erinne Metler coming out on the winning side for her 11th victory of the season, which leaves her just six wins shy of Geneva′s all-time victories list. Metler threw a complete game and allowed five hits for the victory. Geneva got on the board with an unearned run in the third inning, but watched Mt. Vernon tie the game with a tally in the fifth. Amy Pearce knocked in the game winner for Geneva with an RBI double in the sixth inning.

Following the decisive game three on Saturday morning, Geneva will then face Malone College in single non-conference game on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes return home next week for a pair of critical AMC North doubleheaders against Point Park and Carlow.
