Bats Awake In Time For Geneva to Win NCCAA East Region
"Geneva Qualifies for NCCAA National Tournament"
Mt. Vernon, OH - It has been an offensive struggle of late to the least for Geneva′s women′s softball team. However, after splitting the first two games of its best-of-three series with Mt. Vernon on Friday, Geneva had its bats wake up in time to win the NCCAA Eastern Regional. In the decisive game three, Geneva came away with a 7- 3 victory. Just for good measure, Geneva then picked up a 7-6 non-conference victory over Malone College on Saturday afternoon. The two victories helped Geneva improve its overall record to 24-17 and in the process help the Golden Tornadoes advance to next week′s NCCAA national tournament at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Geneva got on the board first win a pair runs in the second inning on a Mary Gaylor RBI double and on a Mt. Vernon throwing error. Mt. Vernon then scored three unanswered runs to take a 3-2 lead heading into the sixth inning. The Mt. Vernon lead didn′t last long as the Golden Tornadoes posted a five-spot in the sixth. Michawn Rich′s RBI double tied the game and Marisa Barickman′s RBI single gave Geneva a one-run lead. Two batters later, Amy Johnson lashed a three-run double to take complete control of the game. Erinne Metler worked five innings to pick up her 12th victory of the season, while Ashley Archer closed the game with two scoreless innings of relief.
In game two, Jackie Anthony scored on a Michawn Rich RBI single in the first inning, but Malone seemingly took control with six runs in the fourth inning. Geneva started chipping into the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning on back to back hits from Rich and Amy Pearce. Trailing by three, Geneva scored four in the sixth inning sparked by three straight singles from Jackie Anthony, Kim Slater and Rich. Anthony and Rich each had three hits in game two.
Archer started the game and pitched four innings with no decision. Stephanie Wagle worked a scoreless fifth inning to pick up her first victory of the season. Erinne Metler closed out Malone with a pair of scoreless innings for her first save of the season.
Geneva will play important AMC North doubleheaders next week against Point Park and Carlow before heading off to the NCCAA national tournament, which begins on Thursday.
