Play-off Series Tied at One, Game Three Set for Friday

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva and Ursuline will take their AMC qualifying series to the limit with game three set for Friday afternoon after the two teams split the first two games of the series on Thursday. Geneva opened the series with a dramatic 3-2 victory in 10 innings and Ursuline came out with big bats in game two for an 8-0 victory to tie the series. Geneva′s overall record moved to 31-20 with the split.

Game one was dominated by pitching on both sides. In fact, Geneva didn′t get a base runner until the fourth inning. Geneva′s Erinne Metler was equally tough as neither team could get on the scoreboard through regulation time. Ursuline finally broke the ice with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, only to see Geneva tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, two-run double from Mary Gaylor. In the bottom of the tenth, Jackie Anthony ripped a triple with two outs and scored on Kim Slater′s game winning base hit. Metler went the distance to earn her 16th victory of the season and 49th of her career, just one shy of Geneva′s all-time record. She struck out six and scattered six hits over ten innings.

In game two, Ursuline jumped on Geneva with an unearned run in the third and then posted four more runs in the fourth. After three additional runs in the fifth inning, Ursuline shut down Geneva for the five-inning victory. Ashley Archer was handed the loss after allowing two earned runs on six hits. Geneva′s only hit came off the bat of Gaylor in the fifth and final inning of game two.

Geneva will host Ursuline on Friday at 5 pm in the third and deciding game of ther series. The winner of the best-of-three series will advance to the Region 9 tournament next week.
