Senior Standout, Metler Pitches Geneva Into Region Tournament

"50th Career Victory Ties for All-Time Geneva Best"

Beaver Falls, PA - Pitching can win or lose softball games and on Friday, it was Geneva′s senior Erinne Metler that shined for the Golden Tornadoes as she fired her seventh shut-out of the season and helped Geneva to a 4-0 victory over Ursuline and a trip to the NAIA Region 9 Tournament for the second time in as many years. Geneva moved to 32-20 on the season as it scored early and held on to win game three of its best of three series that was tied 1-1 coming into the game.

Geneva jumped out with all for of its runs in the first inning. After Jackie Anthony led off with an infield single, she was standing at third with two outs when Amy Pearce connected for her eighth home run of the season to give Geneva the early lead. Three batters later, Bridget Beachy laced a single up the middle that plated two more runs, which was all Geneva and Metler would need.

Metler, who picked up the victory in game one of the series by pitching ten innings on Thursday, came back even stronger on Friday. She allowed just three hits and four base runners in seven innings of work. She struck out four and did not walk a batter in picking up her 17th victory of the season and 50th of her brilliant career. The 50th win tied Geneva′s all-time mark for wins.

Geneva′s victory helps it move on to the region tournament which will take place at Tiffin University beginning next Wednesday. The 7-team, double elimination format will send the region champion to the NAIA national tournament in Decatur, Alabama in two weeks.
