Regional Run Comes to Abrupt End

Mt. Vernon, OH - Geneva′s baseball team came into Wednesday′s NAIA regional tournament having defeated Rio Grande in a first round game one day earlier. Two games and ten hours later, the Golden Tornadoes saw their NAIA play-off hopes come to an end with a pair of losses to Ohio Dominican and Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Geneva dropped a 7-0 decision to Ohio Dominican in game one and watched Mt. Vernon rally past them in the night cap by the score of 4-3. The two losses dropped Geneva′s overall record to 29-20 and ultimately ended its regional run.

In game one, Geneva managed just three hits in a 7-0 loss to ODU. The Panthers put up a three-spot in the first inning against losing pitcher Derek Sumner and they never looked back.

Game two started much better for Geneva as it began the bottom of the first with four straight hits, including RBI singles from Rob Arata and Dan DeMarco. Geneva rode starting pitcher Matt Colella to a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning when MVNU put together a four-run inning that Geneva could not overcome. The Golden Tornadoes did pick up another run to pull within one, but they could not draw even. Colella was impressive on the mound and at the plate. He was 3-3 on the offensive side and he also pitched a complete game with ten strikeouts and no walks in a losing cause. Rob Arata and Andy Hiskey also had a pair of hits for Geneva.

Geneva will now set its sights on the NCCAA national tournament which it will host next week in Youngstown, OH.
