Geneva Opens Softball Regionals with Split

Tiffin, OH - Geneva′s softball team opened the Region 9 NAIA tournament with a two-game split on day one of the seven-team tournament. The Golden Tornadoes opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Ohio Dominican. In round two, Geneva dropped a 9-2 decision to top-seeded and host Tiffin University. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 33-21 on the season. The Golden Tornadoes, now in the loser′s bracket, will continue play on Thursday morning at 10 am against Notre Dame College.

In game one, Erinne Metler became Geneva′s all-time winningest pitcher with her 18th victory of the season and 51st of her career. Metler pitched a complete game and allowed just one unearned run and five hits. Geneva opened the scoring in the second inning when Amy Pearce launched her school record tying ninth home run of the season. After ODU tied the game in the third, Geneva took advantage of a pair of hit batters when Kim Slater′s fielder′s choice plated the eventual game winner. Pearce had two of Geneva′s four hits. Pearce also added a hit in game two for her 66th of the season, which also tied Geneva′s single season record.

Metler started game two against Tiffin, but allowed a pair of runs in two innings of work. Ashley Archer came in to pitch the final four innings and allowed seven earned runs. Archer collected two of Geneva′s six hits and the only two RBI′s with a two-run single in the fifth inning.

With a record of 33-21, Geneva will set a school record in game one on Thursday with its record 55th game of the season. Geneva will need to win a pair of loser bracket games on Thursday to stay alive for the final day of action on Friday.
