Post-Season Awards Swept by Geneva Baseball

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s NAIA play-off run came to an end at the NAIA regional tournament, but the Golden Tornadoes are still looking forward to hosting the NCCAA national tournament in Youngstown, OH next week. After the dust settled in the American Mideast Conference and Region 9 of the NAIA, Geneva′s team swept the top post-season honors.

Matt Colella was named the AMC North and Region 9 player of the year. Colella ended the regular season with a .381 average, including 51 hits, 53 runs scored and a team best eight home runs. Perhaps even more impressive, Colella committed just one error in almost 200 chances at shortstop. Colella was also named a member of the first-ever NAIA Rawlings Gold Glove team. Teammate Mike Bruno was also a member of the Gold Glove team with his perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in left field.

While Colella was busy picking up the player of the year award, Geneva′s Dave Foss was named the AMC North pitcher of the year. Foss was 6-2 with a 4.20 ERA in the regular season. He recorded 29 strikeouts in 55.2 innings of work. In addition to Foss and Colella, Rob Arata, Mike Bruno, Dan DeMarco and Justin Montgomery were also first-team All-Conference selections.

Second team All-Conference selections included Tadd Eyster and Derek Sumner. Brandon Baughman, Andy Hiskey and Andy Lubich were also honorable mention selections.

Colella, the NAIA region 9 player of the year, was joined by Dan DeMarco and Dave Foss on the All-Region first team.

Head coach Alan Sumner was named the AMC North Coach of the Year after guiding the Golden Tornadoes to their first ever AMC North title. Geneva is currently 29-20 after the regional tournament. The Golden Tornadoes are set for the NCCAA nationals, which begin next week.
