Geneva′s NCCAA Tournament Ends Quickly

"Host Drops Two on Day One"

Struthers, OH - This was certainly not what Geneva College and baseball coach Alan Sumner envisioned would be the outcome of its run through the NCCAA national tournament. Geneva College, the host of the 2007 national event, saw its season come to an abrupt end with a pair of losses on the first day of the event. Geneva fell to Bluefield College, VA 12-9 in game one and then dropped a 17-9 decision to Greenville College, IL in a loser′s bracket elimination game. The two losses ended Geneva′s season with an overall record of 29-22.

Geneva, which prided itself on solid pitching and defense in the second half of the season, saw both facets come up short on Wednesday. The AMC North division champs allowed 29 runs combined in the doubleheader loss.

Geneva spotted Bluefield three runs in the first inning and could never recover in game one. Game two was just the opposite with the Golden Tornadoes posting a four-spot in the first inning, but it didn′t last. Greenville rallied for seven runs in the second inning and never looked back. Derek Sumner and Dave Foss took the losses for Geneva, which despite the early exit at the national tournament, enjoyed one of the best season′s in recent history, which resulted in the school′s first divisional title.

With eight teams still remaining in the NCCAA national tournament field, the champion will be crowned on Saturday afternoon.
