Geneva Left Scrambling With Football Schedule, Again

"St. Peter′s College Drops Football, Geneva Adds Salisbury"

Beaver Falls, PA - For the second consecutive summer a Division I-AA football program left Geneva scrambling to fill an open date in its upcoming season. One year after LaSalle University double-booked a date and left Geneva out in the cold, St. Peter′s College announced it was dropping its football program, but this time things worked out fairly well for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva was able to quickly contract a home and home series with Salisbury University beginning in 2007 at Reeves Stadium.

St. Peter′s was in the midst of recruiting problems which left it no choice but to drop the program. "We feel that at this time with the demise of the MAAC Football League and recruiting difficulties that we are having, that it is time to no longer sponsor a football program," said St. Peter′s director of athletics Bill Stein.

As a result of St. Peters′ decision, Geneva was once again left with just nine games and didn′t want to have another season with back to back bye weeks. Head coach and athletic director Geno DeMarco was able to quickly fill the empty spot with Salisbury, which also lost a game due to the sudden announcement from St. Peter′s.

"We worked very hard to get something done quickly," said DeMarco. "I felt our back to back off weeks last year really hurt our football team and I didn′t want to put everyone through that again this year. We were fortunate to hook up with Salisbury, which will prove to be a tremendous test for our football program."

The Golden Tornadoes were scheduled to travel to St. Peter′s College on Thursday night, October 11th prior to the cancellation which left Geneva with back to back open weeks on the sixth and 13th of October. Instead of traveling to Jersey City, NJ this fall, the Golden Tornadoes will fit another home game into their schedule against Salisbury on October 6th at 6:00 pm.

Geneva opens the 2007 season on September 1st with a trip to Thiel College. The Golden Tornadoes open the new season with three consecutive road games before returning to Reeves Stadium on September 22nd against Bethany College.
