FRIDAY NIGHT FRENZY, BRUCK RIDES OFF
INTO THE SUNSET VICTORIOUS
Beaver Falls, PA- Sarah Bruck was playing her final match in a Geneva uniform on Friday night and found herself on the service line with match point staring her directly in the face. The four-year senior hit the last serve of her career and her teammates made that match point stand up as the Golden Tornadoes finished off a 3-2 victory over Saint Vincent College. Geneva′s victory, its fifth in a row to close out the season, improved its overall record to 17-18 after having lost the first 11 matches of the season.
In front of a raucous Friday night crowd at Metheny Fieldhouse, Geneva roared out to a 2-0 lead in very impressive fashion. Geneva dispatched the 23-8 Bearcats by scores of 30-15 and 30-22 in the first two games in less than 45 minutes. One month ago, Geneva opened its match with Saint Vincent with a 2-0 lead only to see the Bearcats rally for a 3-2 victory. On this night, history looked as though it may repeat itself as Saint Vincent rallied once again with wins in games three and four by scores of 30-26 and 30-17. However on this senior night, Geneva was not about to watch its season end on a losing note. With Sarah Bruck as their motivation, the Golden Tornadoes stormed out of the gate in game three to a 10-5 lead and held on for a 15-8 victory in the fifth and final game.
Geneva, which won a share of the AMC North title last year, finished the season with 16 victories in 2006. One year later, the Golden Tornadoes improved upon that mark with 17 victories, which is even more impressive when you factor in Geneva had to win 17 of its final 24 matches of the season to reach that mark.
Freshman Adriane Blake led the offense with 21 kills and she also led on the defensive side of the net with 21 blocks. However, the night belonged to senior Sarah Bruck, who had 13 kills and a season best four blocks. Elizabeth Fisher added 13 kills and Brandi Snavely finished off her outstanding season with a 47 assist effort. It was, without question, the perfect way for Geneva to end its season. From 0-11 to start the season to 17-18 at seasons end. It was quite an impressive turnaround for the Golden Tornadoes and co-head coaches Wendy Smith and Curt Conser.
