Geneva’s indoor and outdoor men and women’s track and field teams are heading into the spring season under the direction of first year head coach Phil Thompson

“Both men and women’s teams are ready to build on last year’s success.”

“A big factor into making the building process a reality is numbers. We are a bigger team this year and are looking for everyone to contribute.”

Returning leaders from last women’s seasons include Anna Wargo (Pittsburgh, PA / Avonworth) who placed first against her conference competition at the PAC Championships in the 800 meter, Sara Williams (Wellsboro, PA / New Covenant Academy) andSara Foy (Rockwood, PA / Rockwood Area) in shot put.

“It is going to be an exciting year with talent on both squads including the freshman.”

Three school records were broken after the second indoor meet of the 2015 season. The records were set by freshman Nicole Bartoletta (Monaca, PA / Central Valley). Bartoletta finished seventh in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.78 seconds and ninth in the 60 meter dash (8.46), both times breaking the school record.

Jess Kelosky (Fombell, PA / Riverside) a sprinter and Madelyn Blosser (Mechanicsburg, PA / Cumberland Valley) a mid-distance runner, jumper Rachael Carey (Glenshaw, PA / Shaler), and  javelin thrower Christina Noble (New Castle, PA/Union)  are four more freshman that join the squad with promise to take the league by storm.

Returners for the men’s squad include senior sprinter and Geneva record holders Josh Guiser (Newell, PA / Frazier), Cameron Unrath (Wexford, PA / Pine Richland), Jacob Mellinger (Leetonia, OH / Crestview) and Ed Schuster (Winter Springs, FL / Winter Springs). Ken Kutcel (Medina, OH / Medina) enters his second year leading the team in distance events.

In the field, Jordan Rupert (Greenville, PA / Greenville) returns after leading the Golden Tornadoes in the javelin throw in 2014. Junior Colin Craig (Covington, PA / North Penn) will step into a leadership position as Geneva’s most experienced male jumper.

“Colin will be needed to help the underclassman to excel in jumps which I am confident he will be able to do.”

One of those underclass is Jacob Feeney (Hermitage, PA / Kennedy Catholic).

“Feeney has lots of potential.”

Clay Smith (Williamsport, MD / Williamsport) is another new face that will strengthen our mid-distance events in the men’s events.”

Geneva’s indoor season has two more events until competing in the PAC Championships for the title and trophy. The Golden Tornadoes outdoor season begins Saturday, March 21 at California University of Pennsylvania. The GTs will host one home meet this season on Thursday, April 16.
