Geneva College’s student choir, The Genevans, presents its 77th spring concert series on Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the John White Chapel of Old Main.
The theme of the concert is “Tell the Good News” featuring a variety of sacred classical music, upbeat spirituals and pieces by several living composers, all of which highlight the gospel story.
“The program can be heard as an arch of Christ’s ministry, from His first recorded synagogue reading to His final commissioning of His disciples,” explains Director Dr. David Kenneth Smith. “In between we hear the themes of repentance, the reception of the gospel message, the unique call of Christ for all to believe in Him alone, and the charge to His followers to preach the gospel to all nations.”
Some of the musical pieces include Cristobal de Morales’ A Sower Went Out to Sow, David Huff’s arrangement of Amazing Grace, and John Ness Beck’s As the Rain, a song based on Isaiah 55.
There are also Psalm arrangements by Mozart contemporary Dmitry Bortnianskya and Dr. Smith himself, in addition to a piece by Diana Whitacre based on Psalm 98, which The Genevans commissioned for its 75th anniversary.
Two audience-favorite selections from the group’s Christmas concert, Go Tell It on the Mountain and Elaine Hagenberg’s Sweetest Music, Softly Stealing, will be reprised.
The performance concludes with Craig Courtney’s arrangement of O Zion Haste, which incorporates passages from Luke 10 and Romans 10.
Dr. Smith expects the night to be an enjoyable musical and spiritual experience. “For me, the creation of the themes, programs, tours and music is a year-round artistic and spiritual venture,” he says. “It is my privilege to provide this experience to these wonderful young people: to sing God's word and allow it to dwell richly in their hearts through song. This is not only a privilege but my primary goal.”
The concert is free and open to the public, and a freewill offering to support the musical ministry of The Genevans will be taken.
