David Howell

Recently at the Scholarship Competition Day, David Howell, class of 1982, shared with a group of prospective students the impact that Geneva College had on his faith, his relationships and his career. Graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering, David has gone on to become Senior Vice President at Westinghouse Nuclear Automation, where he has worked for over 28 years. David has taken Genesis 1:26-28 as his theme verse for his vocation: “Then God said ‘Let us make man in our own image, after our likeness.  And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the heavens, over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.′ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth′.”

As he spoke to the group, David reflected on the Christ-centered education that he received at Geneva. Faith was woven into the curriculum through more than simply attending Bible classes and chapel. Professors in every class reflected that God is sovereign and has a plan for our lives.  “It was one of my engineering professors, Dr. Stan Reyle, that taught me that being an engineer is a calling from God; that God made us for a purpose, and we are part of His plan to subdue the earth,” he said.

Not only did Geneva foster David′s growth in the Lord, it also provided the environment for David to meet his wife, Kelly (Dailey ′80) and develop other lifelong friendships. He values that his wife and the friends he met at Geneva share the same Christian values that he has. “It has been 29 years since I graduated, but I am still good friends with my roommate,” David said.  “We attended his daughter′s wedding a few months ago.”

During his presentation, David also shared the positive impact that a respected degree from Geneva has had on his career. “Academically, Geneva′s professors taught me the technical skills that I needed to be an engineer,” he told the group.  “While the same textbooks were used as were used at other top engineering schools, the professors were able to give me a lot of personal attention and present a biblical worldview. And Geneva′s core classes in the arts and sciences prepared me with the interpersonal and public speaking skills that positioned me to advance in a management career.”

As David wrapped up his presentation to prospective students, he reminded them that “God is sovereign; He created the earth, He created you and me, and He has a plan and purpose for our lives. He challenges us all to remember that living for Jesus Christ is most important. No matter where we go in life, remember these three things: Put God first, family second and your work third.”
