Shining a Light

We live in a fallen world where troubling events are all too common. This is why Geneva College makes every effort to be a place that shines a light for God.

13A Legacy of Freedom Campus Tour
At the beginning of December, Geneva students packed John White Chapel for Christian artist Anthony Mossburg′s kick-off performance of the “13A Legacy of Freedom Campus Tour.” Sponsored by Resolution Hope, the concert was part of the non-profit organization′s National 13A Campaign to end U.S. child trafficking. Concerned students were encouraged to sign the 13A petition; tell 30 of their friends about the campaign through Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn; and make a $5 donation. Geneva was an appropriate place for Resolution Hope to begin this effort because of the institution′s long history of supporting freedom for all human beings: Geneva was a station on the Underground Railroad and among the earliest schools to accept women in the full degree program.

City House
City House is an off-campus housing option that enables Geneva students to develop deep connections in local neighborhoods while living in a Christian community. “We ask students to become familiar with neighbors and the work of local churches and organizations by serving at a soup kitchen, the art center in Beaver Falls, T.R.A.I.L.S. Ministry, Providence Care Center, the library or Tiger Pause,” explains director Wendy Van Wyhe (MAHE ′04).

Criminology Course
Students in Geneva′s criminology class interact weekly with Beaver County Jail inmates to discuss the justice system and hear from people who work in law enforcement. “This class is a great experience for get­ting beyond the stereotypes,” says sociology professor Dr. Brad Frey. “Students quickly realize that these are people who just made mis­takes.”

Quest Trips
Quest Trips provide opportunities for students to participate in short-term mission trips. This spring, Geneva students will serve and bring healing to communities in Aliquippa, PA, New Orleans; Washington D.C.; New York City; and Lamppost Farm in Columbiana, OH.

When members of our community perceive a need, they often step out in faith to make a difference and bring glory to the Lord. “For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them” (1 Corinthians 9:19).
