Introducing the Future Business
Leaders of America

The academic clubs at Geneva College offer students vital opportunities for professional development and growth. Last fall, business major Justin Fink recognized the need for a nationally recognized business club, so he took the initiative to seek the assistance of Professor Denise Murphy-Gerber and Dr. Gordon Richards, brought together a group of students, and went through the demanding process of applying to both the Student Union for club status and the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) for national recognition.

The club started strong by inviting entrepreneur Joseph Nardone to campus. Nardone has been described as a “serial entrepreneur” because he has founded so many companies. He spoke to the students about his process of achieving success, which he described as the “dream, struggle, victory model,” and challenged them to persevere at their goals until they become a reality.

“It was very informative to hear Mr. Nardone talk about starting a business,” says business/aviation major Andrew Shaffer. “Learning from someone who has been there, and also done it from a Christian worldview, was very encouraging to me as a college student.”

Over spring break, several members traveled with professors Murphy-Gerber and Richards to Covelli Centre for a detailed tour of the operations of the Youngstown Phantoms minor league hockey team. The group heard from leaders within the organization, including the public relations manager, operations manager and business consultant.

To finish the year, Chick-fil-A proprietor Diane Brosius came to campus. She described her experience managing several businesses and shared some secrets of successful marketing techniques, such as putting herself in as many situations as possible to share her product and build relationships with the community.

She concluded with some valuable advice: "Whatever you go into, you′ll have so many opportunities to cheat, lie and take advantage of people — don′t. Do the right thing. Everyone is watching you.” That “everyone,” of course, includes the Lord. That “everyone,” of course, includes the Lord.

Brosius′ advice touches on the overall goals of Geneva′s FBLA, which are to develop competent and aggressive business leadership, strengthen the confidence of students in their work, and create more interest in and understanding of American business enterprise.

Looking ahead, Fink says, “We want to continue the high quality speakers, do more trips, participate in FBLA competitions, and become more involved in community service and with prospective students.”

“I expect 2012-13 to be big years for the FBLA,” says Dr. Richards. “The leadership of the club is on fire and wants to make it a successful and meaningful experience for all its members. We will focus on recruiting new members and helping to develop these future leaders and prepare them to carry their faith into the workplace. We will bring in new speakers to share their faith journeys and their business experience. We will get involved in serving the community, and hold some fundraisers to support a short trip to see business in action somewhere in the Western Pennsylvania region. We would also like to take one big trip or to participate in national FBLA conferences every four years. I see big things ahead for these young men and women!”
