EGI Metallurgy Scholarship awarded to Geneva junior
Geneva College student Neil Hanlin was recently awarded the EGI Metallurgy Scholarship by the Ellwood Group, Inc. The scholarship is awarded to students who show skill and commitment in the fields of metallurgy and material science, and who plan to follow a career in the steel or heavy metal industry. The scholarship also includes a summer internship with Ellwood City Forge.
Neil is a mechanical engineering major and mathematics minor. His love for the field started at a very early age. “I have always been interested in building things,” he says. When his high school guidance counselor suggested a major in engineering, “I fit right into the mold as math came easy to me and it involves building or modifying things. I decided on the mechanical concentration mainly because it involves moving parts, and that appealed to me.”
A degree in engineering is very versatile, and Neil hopes to use it to help others achieve “a sustainable way of life,” perhaps by developing new systems or tools that will increase quality of life for people around the world.
The internship at Ellwood City Forge will give Neil hands-on experience in manufacturing, which is crucial to his field. “If someone has designed a brilliant tool for farming or a more effective water filter, they will need it to be manufactured. If someone has a product already out there that is too expensive, there may be a better alternative in manufacturing that would lower the cost. Having experience in this area would help me to be able to assist other people in these types of things.”
Geneva’s College’s financial aid staff is committed to providing students with financing information, tools and solutions to enable students to pursue academically excellent, Christ-centered degrees. From providing resources about outside scholarships to helping maximize financial aid packages to teaching financial management, financial counselors are happy to help. Students can schedule an appointment by contacting the Financial Aid Office at financialaid@geneva.edu or 724-847-6530. |
The scholarship and internship will go a long way in helping Neil prepare for his life after Geneva. “The scholarship helps directly with funds and allows me to focus on things other than affording college my senior year,” he says.
As for the internship, “I am eager to learn what the job will be like and what I will be doing. I know I probably won’t be involved with anything big, but I am still excited for any experience that I will gain.”
Overall, Neil is thankful and excited for this opportunity. “I am so grateful to Ellwood City Forge for offering this and to all the people at Geneva who work to make this opportunity available,” he says. “But most of all I am grateful to God. He has blessed me more than I could ever deserve.”
