Geneva Students Have a Bash with Tiger Pause Kids
Geneva College’s Service Learning program helps students get involved in the local and global community to learn leadership and servanthood skills. One great opportunity for 60 Geneva student volunteers was the first-ever Tiger Pause Pumpkin Patch Bash on Wednesday, November 19.
The Pumpkin Patch Bash brought over 100 elementary school-aged kids to Geneva’s campus for fall fun. Hay bales, pumpkins, corn shocks and balloons adorned the lawn of Old Main for activities that included a sack race, a fall photo booth, face painting, candy corn bingo and many others. Chaperones and cheering Geneva students lined the path from the busses to the celebration to welcome the children.
Then it was time for the kids to grab some bags of popcorn and get started with their activities. Each group of kids enjoyed an activity before they moved on to the next one. The smiles and laughter of children were evident in an atmosphere of fun and games. But perhaps those who got the most out of the event were the Geneva students.
“The Pumpkin Patch Bash was a great event for Geneva students,” says Geneva College Center for Student Engagement (CSE) Coordinator Missy Nyeholt. “Not only is it good training for being of service to our neighbors, but it is also really satisfying to love these community children while just having fun. I’d like to see it become an annual service learning event.”
The Geneva students involved are education majors and students participating for their Learning and Transition classes. The CSE made the event possible as part of a long-standing partnership with Tiger Pause. Originally started by Geneva College students and faculty 28 years ago as an after-school program, Tiger Pause Youth Ministry has grown into a Christ-centered, community-based organization that helps the youth of Beaver County reach their God-given potential. Geneva students continue to serve as Tiger Pause tutors four days a week at different locations around Beaver Falls.
