As parents know, stress and anxiety levels ebb and flow for students throughout the semester depending on their courseload, homework, and other various responsibilities on and off campus. While it’s normal to feel overwhelmed, students can forget the helpfulness in reaching out for support or connecting with resources for accountability. Students have access to all of Student Development, and many find it helpful to utilize the Student Success Center and Counseling Services simultaneously. Both departments offer guidance, suggestions, and various ways to decrease stressors, one step at a time.
In addition to utilizing these offices, there are other ways you can support your student if you hear them mentioning feeling stressed. Feel free to remind them that sometimes taking a break, going outside for a walk around campus or getting coffee with a friend can be enough to reorient them to the task at hand. As always, be mindful of your own stress levels when chatting with your student — the more calm they hear in your voice, the more they will feel comforted and supported.
If your student is not already connected to the Student Success Center or Counseling Services, gently prompt them to send an email to make an appointment!
