MSOL Concepts Reaffirmed in Occupational Therapy Leadership Event

Amy Elgin completed the M.S. in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) program in June 2012. She and the other members of cohort 75 gathered for class one night a week for 24 months at JIDC Park in Johnstown, PA. She shares with us an experience that demonstrates her appreciation for the MSOL degree she earned from Geneva College.

amy-elgin.jpgI have already been able to put my invaluable MSOL experience to work! As one of only 17 occupational therapists selected from over 85 applicants in the nation, I attended an event sponsored by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). The event, "Cultivating Your Power and Influence: The AOTA Leadership Development Program for Managers," was held at AOTA's national office in Bethesda, Maryland on September 11-13, 2012.

This leadership development program is designed to provide the tools needed by occupational therapy professionals to help meet the strategic objective of influencing and leading. Implementation of best leadership practices within the profession will not only help accomplish this objective, but will also serve to develop the next generation of clinically-based leaders.

During the program, nationally recognized professionals spoke on such topics as leading coherently, power and confidence, advocacy, and strategic planning. It was affirming to hear a discussion of now-familiar leadership topics such as servant-leadership; types of power, such as coercive or legitimate; and transformational and transactional leadership topics that I studied in the MSOL program. Other topics included the overlap of leadership and management, empowered leadership, the power of mission and vision, conflict-resolution and communication skills.

I was able to fully participate and provide valuable insight during these discussions as I drew upon concepts and theories studied in MSOL. Having the opportunity to effectively participate in the AOTA event brought my MSOL experience full circle as I reflected on how the program emphasized the importance of not only education, but also the alignment of personal values and professional aspirations.

I want to thank Dr. Jim Dittmar and Geneva College for preparing me so well to meet the ever-changing challenges in my profession!

-Amy Elgin, MSOL, OTR/L, BCP
