Geneva alumna and instructor wins leadership award

Lutitia ClipperCongratulations to our very own Dr. Lutitia Clipper who has received the Women in Energy Leadership award! Dr. Clipper is a graduate of the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership program and an instructor for the school’s Master of Science in Leadership Studies program.
But her relationship with Geneva College began even before her graduate studies. Dr. Clipper received her bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the college and appreciated the faculty’s student interest and the Christian values-based environment that complemented the quality education. It was her mother’s influence that encouraged her to look for ways to prepare herself for organizational changes that seemed inevitable in her job.

Giving her sure footing in times of occupational change was just one of the ways the MSOL program, now the Master of Science in Leadership Studies (MSLS) program, benefited Dr. Clipper. After completing her master’s degree, she was accepted into the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education and earned her PhD in higher education administrative and policy studies concentrating on social and comparative analysis in education.

She also notes that the courses in this program prepared her to “navigate the waves of change in the culture of the organization.” This navigation is something that Dr. Clipper became practiced in. “In retrospect, the Program enabled me to hone those skills to assume leadership roles beyond my designated areas of responsibilities that encouraged my advancing new technology and non-traditional uses of natural gas for transportation.” This led to innovative energy solutions for customers and developing new projects. “Fast forward to present, my engineering degree, MSOL, and my doctorate were all building blocks useful to launch an entrepreneurial endeavor, Clipper Enterprises LLC, my new business after retirement from the energy industry.”

The Women in Energy Leadership Award is given by the Pittsburgh Business Tribune and is an acknowledgement to inspirational women who are leading and impacting the region’s energy sector. Dr. Clipper and Clipper Enterprises, LLC. have developed alternative fuel projects for companies such as Pitt Ohio, McQuiade Trucking, and UPS. She also introduced Pennsylvania’s first dedicated natural gas transit bus. “It is gratifying to see how the Lord has directed and blessed my academic and employment career with scholastic and professional training.” Currently she serves as project manager of the Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities U.S. DOT Maritime Administration’s first inland waterway emission reduction conversion marine vessel to natural gas research demonstration project.

At Geneva College, God has certainly been faithful in providing faculty that not only have workplace experience, but also excel in their fields. Dr. Clipper is one of those faculty members! If you haven’t already, consider joining an upcoming Master of Science in Leadership Studies program and benefit from the enriching instruction from Dr. Clipper and many others. “The Program is capable of addressing the needs of both the student just completing the baccalaureate degree and the employed person who is interested in returning to complete an advanced degree,” she encourages. And now with the online course offerings, the program fits your lifestyle and commitments. “The MSLS program is competitive in that it provides a curriculum that equips employees personally and professionally to keep pace with industry’s ever changing needs.”

From Your Academic Success Coach

Do you ever have to re-read the same paragraphs over and over because you aren’t really paying attention to what you’re reading? Or do you walk away from reading only to forget what you just read? One reading strategy that can help you become more engaged and more effective in your reading is the SQ3R method.

S-Survey the chapter before reading.
Q-Question while you survey the reading. What do you know about the subject? What should you know? What are the terms or theories that you’ll be learning?
R-Read. Look for answers to your earlier questions as you read. Note important words, phrases, or ideas! Study graphics. Re-read parts that are unclear.
R-Recite. Ask yourself questions about what you just read. Stop every few paragraphs and take some notes, or underline/highlight key ideas. Say the important concepts out loud, or write them down!
R-Review. Re-read the chapter, or review your notes/highlights. Revisit the text the following day, or ask yourself questions about the material to see what you remember.
