Chelsea Curry is fall 2019 graduate. During her undergraduate time at Geneva College, she was a member of the Geneva Marching Band and Student Alumni Association. She was also involved in the Geneva College yearbook. Chelsea shared the inspiration, along with some other current Geneva students, to bring back the Geneva College yearbook on its 100-year anniversary.
Chelsea Curry did not intend to come to Geneva. In fact, since her two older siblings had attended Geneva she was excited to move on to another college, different from the one that was so familiar to her family already. However, Chelsea had been interested in linguistics ever since junior year in high school, and she was looking for a school that provided a career in speech pathology. Geneva College happened to be one of the few small Christian Colleges that provided this major, communication disorders.
Once at Geneva, Chelsea began her major in communication disorders. Chelsea, however, realized that her real interest was in linguistics. Geneva did not provide a linguistics major, so she sought out counsel about how to begin a new Independent major. Dr. Jonathan Watt, Professor of Biblical Studies and Chair, Department of Bible Christian Ministries and Philosophy at Geneva College, helped her create her linguistic independent major.
Although Chelsea walked out of high school not wishing to attend Geneva, she began to fall in love with the college as a whole. Part of why she is so grateful for her Geneva education is the professors who are so knowledgeable and invested with their student’s personal well-being in and out of the classroom. At Geneva, Chelsea learned to not just take what people say as truth but to ask questions and find out the truth for herself. She also enjoys the unique close-knit community found at Geneva.
After Chelsea’s college career at Geneva College came to an end, she began an exciting job in customer service with an eye toward growing and advancing. With linguistics as a base, she would be comfortable in Public Relations writing or communication journalism. Also on her mind is a plan to continue her education with a masters in linguistics and an ultimate goal to become a second language pedagogist.
