Darby Fields

Darby Fields is a prospective 2023 graduate of Geneva College from Parkersburg, West Virginia. She is majoring in Communication with a double concentration in Public Relations and Integrated Media, and her journey to Geneva began with radio. Darby said, “One day I was listening to K-Love and an ad popped up and I thought why not look into Geneva College. As it turned out, that was a God moment that helped guide me to Geneva.”

Darby FieldsJust as a radio broadcast brought Darby to Geneva, she hopes to leave here with a career in broadcasting. Darby has wanted to work in sports journalism and broadcasting for a long time, and once she visited Geneva, saw the Integrated Media Center, the broadcasting equipment and heard about the Communication program, she knew this would be somewhere she could excel and further her abilities.

Aside from the equipment and opportunities at the college, Darby was also drawn to the community and culture of Geneva. Since being here she says, “I can really feel God moving throughout the Geneva community.” Darby explained how she has developed personally by saying, “My faith is growing here at Geneva partly because I have had the opportunity to speak with my RA and RD about real faith issues, and this has helped me grow personally and communally.”

In her major, Darby loves how close the students are. She also values how the professors genuinely care about their students and the discipline of communication. The integration of faith and learning in her classes has been obvious through the way professors conduct themselves inside and outside the classroom. Darby illustrated this by stating that, “We pray in class and professors often talk about their faith freely during classes and outside of class.”

Aside from classes, homework and friends, Darby is also a part of a student run club: Gold Spire Creative. Gold Spire Creative is a student run communication production club that works with many different media. Within the first weeks of school, Darby joined Gold Spire and quickly realized she wanted to be more involved with this club. As a board member of Gold Spire, Darby has the opportunity to do what she loves, working with fellow students to improve skills in broadcasting and journalism.

Like many of her classmates, Darby loves Geneva and the community she has found here. One of her favorite activities, which many Geneva students past and present can identify with, is a late night Sheets run. Even though she has only been here for a short time, running from Clarke Hall to Sheets with friends is one of her favorite memories that she believes will last a lifetime. Darby is thrilled to be learning and living at Geneva and looks forward to the years ahead.
