Katharyne Reitsma is a senior double major in English Writing and Communication with a Concentration in Integrated Media. When she first started at Geneva, she thought she had a very clear vision of what she wanted to do, but god had different plans for her than she had for herself.
When Katharyne was a senior in high school applying for colleges, she knew she wanted a Christian school, in the United Sates, that offered a B.A. in Writing. That narrowed her choices significantly. She initially decided to go to Malone University in Canton, Ohio, she had put her deposit down and was excited about her choice. A few days later, she found out that the head of the Writing Department was leaving the school, and they had not yet hired a replacement. Suddenly Katharyne felt uneasy about her choice; as if she knew nothing about the school, she would be attending. She wondered if she should go to a school that she knew more about. She wondered what God’s plan for her was. Soon after, she received a letter in the mail from Geneva College, talking about their commitment to Christian education and to helping students fulfill their Godly calling.
Katharyne withdrew from Malone and the following Fall Semester she began her journey at Geneva. Coming into College Katharyne was sure she wanted to be an author. She was sure writing was the path for her. Though she came in as a double major, she was not convinced she needed to complete her communication Degree. However, after spending time in the Communication Department and taking classes like Interpersonal Communication and Communication Theory Katharyne found a completely new side to writing that she loved. She says, “I love both departments. At times, it has been hard to fully invest in each department, but it was important to me to make the most of my education. The professors at Geneva have so much knowledge and wisdom to share; I wanted to take it all in.”
Katharyne has been involved in many different activities and clubs on campus. She works for the Geneva College Marketing and Public Relations office, and she is involved in College Hill RP Church. Katharyne will graduate in May of 2020, and will look for a job working in marketing, content management, or writing.
