The Geneva College Student Center renovation includes a state-of-the-art accessibility lift at the main entrance. The lift allows any students or visitors with disabilities or who have difficulty scaling stairs to access the Brigadoon, the campus mailroom, Skye Lounge, the Student Success Center, the Center for Calling and Career, the Crossroads Enriched Learning Office, the Student Development Office, the bookstore, and more.
Workers removed one side of the double staircase at the entrance to make way for the lift. The amazing woodwork, including the stairwell railings, received a facelift thanks to Geneva's in-house carpenter, Richard Fleisher. The remaining stairs were completely rebuilt. In addition to the added functionality, the lift with its dark, tinted plexiglass creates an attractive display when viewed along with the warm-brown wood wall panels and the embossed gold tin ceiling.
A donation from the estate of Martha Hamiilton '46 financially supported the work. Hamilton was a librarian for 31 years in the New Brighton School District after graduating from Geneva. Her gift is helping to make the Geneva campus more accessible to everyone and enabling the college to live out the core value of inspiring vibrant hospitality.
