Hidden Homecoming: 6 Awesome Things to Do that You might Not Know About
With the added wrinkle of a presidential inauguration – the first since 2004, Geneva’s Homecoming & Family Weekend is going to be dawn to dusk to nighttime bonfire chock full of greetings, hugs, reunions, memories, music, speakers, sports, prayer, laughter, food and fun. It’s a time so full of tradition and recollection that it is easy to get into a wonderful routine about what it is and what to do once you get here.
Of course, you will be enjoying the annual Broadway Revue, The Genevans concert, the many family activities and the GTs playing football. But how about some of those hidden Homecoming activities that you’ve never tried or never knew about? How about those awesome opportunities that are new this year? In honor of the inauguration of a new Geneva College president, why not try something new this weekend and take a look at these six awesome things to do that you might not know about.
- Inaugural Worship Service – Thursday, September 22 at 7 p.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse
Start your weekend on Thursday night with worship. Chaplain Rut Etheridge leads the service and Pastor Jeff Stivason delivers the Sermon, The God Who Speaks from II Peter 1:16-21. The Genevans will perform a Psalm 103 motet written by current Geneva College student Michael Kearny ’17. Current students can get chapel credit for attending.
- A Conversation with Ken Myers – Friday, September 23 at 3 p.m. in West Reading Room
The inaugural keynote speaker will spend additional time on campus elaborating on his views of contemporary culture in light of the historic Christian faith. Take the opportunity to hear from the host and producer of the Mars Hill Audio Journal and ask questions.
- Geneva College Zip Line – Friday, September 23 from 4 – 8 p.m. next to Student Center
Ready for some fast fun? The newly re-installed Zip Line will be open on Friday afternoon. Starting from the ground, you’ll travel 800 feet at up to 37 mph. Open to ages 5 and above.
- Open Mic Night for Students & Siblings – Friday, September 23 at 8 p.m. in Skye Lounge
Poetry, music, dramatic reading - Think you’ve got what it takes to entertain a whole room? Students can grab brothers or sisters or go solo and give it a try at Open Mic Night. Sign up is required and open until Thursday.
- Root Beer & Pretzels for Parents & Families – Friday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the tent on Old Main lawn
Enjoy some good, old-fashioned root beer and soft pretzels from the Philly Pretzel Factory of Cranberry Township. It's family fun on the lawn of Old Main. While supplies last.
- Arts Festival & Food Vendors – Saturday, September 24 at 11:30 a.m. until game time on the pedestrian walkway & Old Main circle
Back after a more than three-year hiatus, the Arts Festival will include only unique handcrafted items made by Geneva alumni and friends of Geneva. From wreaths to soaps to wood carvings, you’ll find great gifts for someone special, maybe even for yourself. And the food vendors are back including Papa Duke's, Chick-fil-A, and the Franktuary food truck. Get your kettle corn and check out a new gourmet cupcake booth, as well as booths for student clubs, which will have Philly Pretzels and Oram’s donuts.
So, those are just six things to do that you (used to) not know about. Homecoming & Family Weekend with Inauguration is going to be great.
