June 2011Crystal Bynum - Servant Leader
Crystal Bynum, MSOL Cohort 62, was honored by the New Pittsburgh Courier at a reception held on April 29, 2011. Crystal was recognized as a member of the "Fab 40," a select group of Pittsburgh′s young African American men and women under the age of 40 who have demonstrated the ability, determination, focus and fortitude to tackle the challenges and negative images faced by black youth. The "Fab 40" provides pragmatic leadership that honors those who preceded them and inspires those who will follow in their footsteps. Crystal is a marketing executive and communications specialist serving as the Vice President of Business Development for Bynum′s Marketing and Communications. She earned a bachelor′s degree in broadcasting and electronic media from Geneva in 2004 and a master′s degree in organizational leadership from Geneva in 2010. Both degrees uniquely prepared her with the technical knowledge in communications and leadership skills to manage and inspire others, which has been crucial to her success. As vice president of her organization she works with a range of businesses to strategize initiatives for growth to reach long-term marketing goals. She has been recognized professionally for leading interactive workshops on topics ranging from "Recession-Proof Marketing" to "21st Century Marketing Trends." Crystal′s community efforts include serving as trustee for Brown Chapel AME Church, treasurer for the Pittsburgh Conference of Lay Organizations and serving as assistant coordinator for the Gift of Hope Fundraiser, which benefits the Functional Literacy Ministry of Haiti. She has also served as commissioner and co-chair for diversity, outreach and civic engagement for the Propel Pittsburgh Commission and is involved in several other volunteering activities to aid youth and senior citizens. Program Director Dr. Jim Dittmar and the faculty of Geneva′s MSOL program would like to thank Crystal for her commitment to servant leadership. We are proud of the difference she has made, and continues to make, in her community and in the world. We are honored to count Crystal as one of our MSOL alumni and wish her continued success in the future!

In the Geneva College Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) program, we believe leadership is more than position, power or prestige. Leadership is about people, relationships, influence and service. We strive to remain connected with our graduates long after they leave the program because we are interested in knowing how they are applying these leadership concepts in their communities, families and places of employment. In this issue of "Link to Leadership", we are privileged to share an update on one of our 2010 graduates, Ms. Crystal Bynum.
