Parenting Through the College Years: Encouraging Faith That Endures

Recent studies show that about two-thirds (66%) of young adults who grew up in the church stop attending during their college years. Additionally, about 36% of college students now claim no religious affiliation (2023). These years can significantly shape a student’s faith journey, raising an important question: How can we help students hold onto — or even discover — their faith in college?

At Geneva College, the mission is to provide a Christ-centered academic community that equips students for faithful and fruitful service to God and neighbor. Faith is woven into every aspect of campus life — from classroom discussions to weekly chapel services and student events. However, exposure to faith doesn’t automatically lead to engagement. Some students choose to disengage, sitting in chapel with earbuds in or skipping faith-based events. This isn’t to shame them but to recognize a common challenge: many students struggle to see why God matters in their personal lives.

This is where our partnership with you as parents is so strategic.

Research shows that parental engagement is one of the most powerful influences on a student’s faith. Children whose parents consistently attend church and actively practice their faith are far more likely to develop a lasting spiritual foundation. Engaged parents help foster better mental health, stronger self-esteem, and fewer behavioral issues in their children. Simply put, your own faith practice matters deeply.

Beyond modeling faith, one of the best ways to help your student grow spiritually is to encourage them to stay engaged. One of my greatest challenges as campus minister is that despite my deep desire and efforts to do so, I can’t meet with every student personally. I know many are wrestling with big questions — about faith, identity, purpose — but we can’t help if we don’t know where they are. That’s why I love to help students find mentors during their time in college — someone who can walk with them through life and faith.

There are plenty of opportunities at Geneva for this kind of growth: Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Upper Room, church partnerships, Bible studies, and discipleship groups. But students also need to take the initiative. The Barna Group reports that while 39% of Christians lack a mentoring relationship, those who do have one tend to show deeper faith, stronger church involvement, and more personal transformation.

Ultimately, programs help — but it’s the student’s willingness to seek truth, ask questions, and open themselves to God's grace that makes the biggest difference. Christ reminds us that salvation is by grace, not works, but He also calls us to respond to that grace.

If you want to help your child grow in their faith, start by engaging your own. Ask thoughtful questions. Be patient with their doubts. Encourage them to seek mentors and make the most of the resources available to them. Life in Christ is a journey — and college is a crucial chapter. We are excited to partner with you to challenge and support our students to pursue it with all their hearts.
