Geneva College - Alumni & Friends FYI Newsletter - February 26, 2021

Welcome!

Dear Geneva Alumni,

We are grateful for our students, faculty, and staff whose thoughtful cooperation have enabled our community to continue face-to-face, in-person learning in the first six weeks of the spring semester. Masking, maintaining physical distance, and completing daily health screenings feels cumbersome, and we look forward to closer personal contact and more gatherings again in the future. For now, maintaining these practices is having good results in limiting the spread of COVID-19 at Geneva.

As a result, you'll notice we are beginning to re-introduce a few hospitality services, like McCartney Library coffee. Within careful limits, our admissions team is hosting prospective students for personal campus visits, and student-athletes are competing in league play within our conference.

It's a blessing and a reminder of the Lord's grace that Geneva has had your support. Thank you for continuing to serve God and neighbor – Pro Christo et Patria.

We ask you to pray with us to the Lord for help and guidance in seeking His will in our ministry of education and the provision needed to carry it out with excellence. Please pray with us for:

  • The mental and emotional health of students as they continue their education
  • The protection of God over our student-athletes to prevent interruption of varsity athletic competition
  • The continued prevention of large outbreaks, which allows us to display vibrant hospitality to visitors
  • Chapel services that have provided so much encouragement and hope to our community
Warmly in Christ,

Calvin L. Troup, PhD,
President

Gold & White Challenge Update
After eclipsing the goal of 50 alumni-referred applicants to the college this fall, Geneva President Calvin L. Troup, PhD, announced a new Gold & White Alumni Referral Challenge: 100 alumni-referred applicants by April 1. We're nearly halfway to the new goal with 72.

By referring high school students to Geneva Admissions, you are giving the applicants the gift that only Geneva alumni can give – a $4,000 Gold & White Alumni Grant upon enrollment.

Can you help us get to 100? That's just 28 more referrals who apply.

March Matchness Begins Monday!
With a contribution to Geneva during the month of March, you can maximize your commitment to an institution where God is at work, raising up a new generation of servant-leaders. Geneva's governing boards will match—dollar for dollar—every gift you give to the COVID-19 Project, Geneva Fund, and/or Geneva Athletic Fund up to a total of $205,000. Your gift of $50 would become a total gift of $100. A gift of $100 would become $200, and so on. Potentially, $410,000 may be raised for students towards their Christ-centered education.

Won't you help make this goal a reality for students by making your gift during March Matchness?

If you're interested in joining a reunion planning committee, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni@geneva.edu.

Geneva is Military Friendly
Congratulations to Geneva College for earning the 2021-2022 Military Friendly School designation at the Gold level with a No. 1 ranking it its division!

Institutions earning the Military Friendly School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. Over 1,200 schools participated in the 2021-2022 survey with 747 earning the designation. The 2021-2022 Military Friendly® Schools list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine and can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com.

Beth Wiruth, Geneva Military Enrollment Specialist, says, "Geneva College focuses on living up to commitments made to God and neighbor. So, achieving Military Friendly School designation is a natural extension of living out our commitments to members of the U.S. armed forces and their qualifying dependents."

R.E.D. Fridays on Campus to Remember Everyone Deployed
By Beth Wiruth, Geneva's Military Enrollment Specialist
This Friday you may encounter an unusual number of students, staff and faculty wearing red. It's R.E.D. Friday – and R.E.D. stands for Remember Everyone Deployed.

As a veteran who has spent time deployed abroad, I can tell you that it can feel that we are out of sight, out of mind. That is the very reason a group of civilians took up the cause to honor and remember our military and especially those deployed. Their small initiative in Raleigh, NC in 2002 spread across the country.

The Student Veterans Club on campus is sponsoring R.E.D. Friday the third Friday of each month. Students write notes or drop off donations for our monthly Care Packages to our deployed students. They love anything from home!

Join us this R.E.D. Friday by wearing RED and remembering, and praying, for our deployed Soldiers.
--------

Geneva currently has four students who have put their education on pause for one year as they are deployed in service to our country. Kayla Hubbs, Corey White, Henry Kennedy and Chawit Chutikul are deployed around the world. A fifth student, Jordan Greshko, also put her education on hold and is currently at Basic Training in Fort Jackson, SC. Thank you for your support and prayers for these Geneva students!

In the Library... It's Time to Smell the Coffee Again
In a sign of hopefulness, a much-loved Geneva nicety that was suspended under pandemic conditions is back by popular demand. The McCartney Library staff is excited to offer warm beverages to students again and is following all appropriate safety protocols as they do so.

The library is once again a great place to stop for a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate whenever the library is open.

New Collaborative Study App Introduced
We already know that studying in 2020 and 2021 is different than it used to be. And it's going to change again. And this is a change students just may like.

Dr. Melinda Stephens, Provost, shared the following information with students about a new and helpful way to study during these challenging times.

We're kicking off this Spring semester with CircleIn, a web and mobile studying app designed to help you get organized and study with your classmates remotely - while giving you the chance to earn rewards by helping your peers! The more you join in, the more rewards you can win!

Once you've logged in, you'll be instantly connected with all of your classmates. CircleIn offers a variety of studying features, all in one place, that will help you stay productive and succeed! You'll be able to create and review flashcards, generate quizzes, share notes, chat, get on-demand help, and so much more.
