New Collaborative Study App Introduced
We already know that studying in 2020 and 2021 is different than it used to be. And it’s going to change again. And this is a change students just may like.

Dr. Melinda Stephens, Provost, shared the following information with students about a new and helpful way to study during these challenging times.

We're kicking off this Spring semester with CircleIn, a web and mobile studying app designed to help you get organized and study with your classmates remotely - while giving you the chance to earn rewards by helping your peers! The more you join in, the more rewards you can win!

Once you’ve logged in, you’ll be instantly connected with all of your classmates. CircleIn offers a variety of studying features, all in one place, that will help you stay productive and succeed! You’ll be able to create and review flashcards, generate quizzes, share notes, chat, get on-demand help, and so much more.

Chapel – Remote Yet Together
Chapel continues to be held every Wednesday in small groups locations on campus where students, faculty and staff gather together to focus on the Lord. Chapel, including a message, is livestreamed each week to all groups at the same time.

Messages for the upcoming weeks will be given by:
  • February 24 – Dr. Will Baker
  • March 3 – No Classes/No Chapel
The Geneva community prays that Chapel will be a blessing for all.

Remind your student to register for this opportunity.

A Recognition Worth Noting
Geneva was just named the Best Christian University in Pennsylvania by editorially independent website Intelligent.com. The college has an 80.88 Intelligent Score, an unbiased assessment from publicly available sources of program strength, student readiness, return on investment, cost and student engagement on a scale from 0 to 100.

Geneva comes in at No. 25 overall among 182 Pennsylvania universities and colleges assessed by Intelligent.com.

Intelligent.com also recognized Geneva’s Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Human Resource Management program as a top pick at No. 14 of 363 nationally comparative education programs with an Intelligent Score of 83.27 and for having the Best Student-to-Faculty Ratio. Geneva’s undergraduate Bachelor of Business Administration and MBA programs are nationally accredited by the ACBSP.

Geneva’s online M.S. in Leadership Studies program was also ranked well against peer schools at No. 11 out of 60 programs evaluated with a score of 95.49 and a nod as Best Liberal Arts University.

Practice Daily Health Screening
The daily health screening is an important tool to help Health Services in mitigating the virus in our community, and we expect everyone to complete it daily, whether or not they are on campus. To encourage regular participation in Health Screening, Geneva will charge a $5 fee daily to students who don’t complete it.

Here's additional important information:
  • We’re all called to care for our community. Faculty and staff will also be penalized when they don’t complete their Daily Health Screening.
  • Students will continue to get a GC Alert reminder early every morning. If they don’t complete the screening, they will get an email reminder later in the day.
  • Students will be given three grace "misses" before charges begin.
  • All moneys collected will go to improving the isolation and quarantine experience for students.
  • While students are encouraged to complete the screening seven days a week, they will not be fined if they miss on Sunday. But it is especially important for everyone to complete the Health Screening when they experience symptoms, no matter the day.

Reading Days Throughout the Semester

A semester without a week-long break can be challenging for busy students, so the Spring ’21 schedule was planned with an occasional day off for students to get caught-up, get ahead or rest. There are a number of No Class/Reading Days built into the semester. Here’s the complete list:
  • Wednesday, March 3
  • Thursday, March 25
  • Friday, April 2
  • Wednesday, April 21

Adverse Weather Procedures

We are in the middle of a Western Pennsylvania winter, and the prognosticating groundhog did not offer us any hope this week for an early spring. No matter, we are prepared for adverse weather that makes travel difficult and, sometimes, dangerous. The college strives to make informed decisions that balance student, faculty and staff safety.

Geneva Provost Dr. Melinda Stephens clarified the policy for attendance related to commuting students during hazardous conditions in an email this week. She wrote that on occasions of adverse weather conditions not sufficient to cancel classes, commuting students who honestly believe that travel to campus may be hazardous may choose not to do so. Faculty may require students to participate in class through remote access. The student must contact the faculty member in advance to notify them that they are unable to travel and receive instructions to connect remotely.

R.E.D. Fridays on Campus to Remember Everyone Deployed
By Beth Wiruth, Geneva’s Military Enrollment Specialist

This Friday you may encounter an unusual number of students, staff and faculty wearing red. It’s R.E.D. Friday – and R.E.D. stands for Remember Everyone Deployed.

As a veteran who has spent time deployed abroad, it can feel that we are out of sight, out of mind. That is the very reason a group of civilians took up the cause to honor and remember our military and especially those deployed. Their small initiative in Raleigh, NC in 2002 spread across the country.

The Student Veterans Club on campus is sponsoring R.E.D. Friday the third Friday of each month. There will be a table in Alex’s where you can stop by to write a note or drop off donations for our monthly Care Packages to our deployed students. Suggestions for donations include candy, notes, small toiletries, socks, small games – to be honest, they love anything from home! Or you can donate to cover the postage.

We also invite you to take selfies of you and your friends wearing red. You can even record a message. Then email your selfie and or video to veterans@geneva.edu. We will collect these selfies, put them on thumb drives and include them in our care packages. Deployed servicemembers LOVE these! Join us this R.E.D. Friday by wearing RED and remembering, and praying, for our deployed Soldiers.
--------

Geneva currently has four students who have put their education on pause for one year as they are deployed in service to our country. Kayla Hubbs, Corey White, Henry Kennedy and Chawit Chutikul are deployed around the world. A fifth student, Jordan Greshko, also put her education on hold and is currently at Basic Training in Fort Jackson, SC. Thank you for your support and prayers for these Geneva students!

Geneva Theater Will Present Radio Plays!

Geneva’s Theater Program announces two upcoming spring radio play productions. The first is “Alice in Wonderland,” adapted and directed by Geneva Theater Program Director Mindy Williams, with performances on February 25-27 at 7:30 p.m.

The second spring radio play production will be “Treasure Island,” adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel by student actor Laura Miller and directed by Mindy Williams. The Theater Program will present this production from March 11-13 at 7:30 p.m.

The adventures explored in each of these pieces give us an opportunity to reflect on human curiosity and wonder, as well as the dangers that come when we enter new territory. They push us to imagine new ways of doing things and remind us that things are not always what they appear to be. Geneva College students will grow their talents in vocal acting as they navigate the nuances of a show that captivates the imagination primarily through the art of sound.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no in-house admission. However, the shows will be live-streamed and available for viewing at no cost. Enjoy!
