In support of Religious Freedom
Members of the Geneva College community demonstrated strong support for the college’s case against the federal government outside of the U.S. Supreme Court building on Wednesday, March 23. While they gathered outside, attorneys were inside presenting historic oral arguments regarding the illegal law requiring religious non-profits to provide abortion-inducing drugs through their health insurance plans. The Alliance Defending Freedom has been representing Geneva in this case since February of 2012.
Dr. Millie Johnson, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Geneva, was among those in Washington representing Geneva. Concerned about the fight for the sanctity of life and freedom of religion, she spoke at a news conference organized by attorneys involved in the case. “Geneva College simply wants to continue to operate according to the faith it was founded on and the faith that still inspires the college to serve the community and the world today. We should have the right to peacefully operate according to our beliefs without fear of severe punishment by the government. Geneva College stands strong on its Christian values, and we will fight to defend those values until the very end.”

Senior English major Elsa Spear also spoke outside of the U.S. Supreme Court building. “We believe that all deserve life, and abundant life. Why? Because we love God and we love our world. At Geneva College, we strive to love, honor, and serve people as best we can and we strive to love, honor and serve Christ as best we can. We should be allowed to continue.”
“I’m here today with Geneva College in support of religious freedom,” senior communication major Celia Harris said at a Women Speak for Themselves rally. “Our college is being threatened with an implementation that we would have to pay for certain abortive devices and drugs that we feel go against our religious convictions.”
Geneva is thankful for the students, faculty and friends of the college who travelled to Washington D.C. But ongoing support is needed as the Supreme Court may not reach a decision for some time. Please pray continually for a decision in favor of Geneva and freedom of religion. And pray also for the college’s attorneys and fellow litigants.
