Introducing The McCartney Society: A Virtual Book Club for Alumni and Friends
Last fall, a multigenerational group of alumni in the Pittsburgh area launched a book study to provide a regular time of intellectual engagement, Christian fellowship, and devoted prayer for the mission and needs of Geneva College. The group adopted the name “The McCartney Society” in honor of Presbyterian minister Clarence Macartney, a bold defender of the orthodox Christian faith in the early years of the 20th century and the namesake of Geneva College’s McCartney Library.
The concept of the McCartney Society is simple: alumni and friends of Geneva College gathering to discuss great works of literature in order to cultivate practical wisdom for the Christian life. The McCartney Society seeks to continue the conversations begun in Geneva’s Humanities core curriculum, providing edification and fellowship for graduates and friends of the college as they navigate their callings in the marketplace, the academy, and the church.
In light of the continued uncertainty of the public health situation, the McCartney Society is going “on the grid”—and it’s also going global. We invite all alumni and friends of Geneva College join us this fall via Zoom as we discuss Os Guinness’ book Fool’s Talk: Recovering the Lost Art of Christian Persuasion. Our first meeting will be held on Thursday, August 6 at 7:00 p.m. EST. Meetings will be held every 6 to 8 weeks for an hour at a time; look for a finalized schedule in a future update.
Now as much as ever, the Christian faith needs bold, winsome, and charitable advocates in all professions and vocations. Consider joining the McCartney Society this fall as we seek to explore the lifelong implications of Pro Christo et Patria while encouraging one another as a community of Geneva College graduates.
Look for more details soon for an invitation to join the Zoom call and be part of our first virtual discussion. All who participate will receive a special McCartney Society bookmark. For additional information, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni@geneva.edu.
Special thanks to Michael R. Kearney ’17 (Wilkinsburg, PA), alumni council member, for initiating The McCartney Society and being part of its continued growth, now virtually.

Geneva’s Center for Calling & Career
We are pleased to introduce Krista Autrey, director of the center for calling and career! Krista shares a word with alumni and invites you to connect. Please remember that calling and career services are available for alumni too!
“I was excited to start at Geneva this past February, in the recently renamed Center for Calling and Career, formerly known as the Career Development Center. I am even more excited to get back to campus this fall. We are in the process of rebranding and even redesigning the office space in order to create a more intentional space for on-campus interviewing. We hope to use this space to host employers and give students more opportunities to connect with them without even having to leave campus.
In terms of the name change, we know that questions of career and work are much bigger than just writing a resume or finding an internship. Questions of vocation and calling are with us our whole lives and are critical to our spiritual and personal growth. Our desire is to create a more holistic approach to career development and discernment and to offer a center that works with students from the time they enter as a freshman through when they step out into the marketplace after graduation.”
Krista hopes to meet many of you in person over the coming months but in the meantime, please feel free to reach out via email at kmaturey@geneva.edu if you would like to connect!
Geneva COVID-19 Project Fund Approved for $1M
Geneva has established a project fund to respond to needs brought on by this pandemic. COVID-19 Project funding will be used for relief in specific, well-defined areas. These areas include the following.
Additional expenses in delivering online instruction;
- Preservation of core functions of college personnel to the greatest extent practical;
- Offset of college-funded scholarships to provide budget relief;
- Revenue losses from lower tuition revenue;
- Loss of expected room and board.
Reaching this goal contributes to keeping Geneva in a sound financial position. Through the strong leadership of the Board of Trustees, Geneva has little long-term debt and this will be paid off in September of 2021.
We ask, if God has blessed you to be able to do so, that you consider a gift to the Geneva COVID-19 Project.
