Geneva College - Alumni & Friends FYI Newsletter - November 20, 2020

Welcome!

Dear Geneva Alumni,

God’s faithfulness appears in sharp contrast against backgrounds of challenging circumstances like the ones facing the College this semester. By His grace, our students have been blessed by the face-to-face instruction and life-on-life learning to which we are so deeply committed at Geneva. Despite the difficulties and the pandemic fatigue, our Lord continues to shepherd us — He is close at hand.

Thanks to you for adapting with us through our move to online format for Homecoming, putting campus visits and in-person alumni events on hold, and supporting the ministry of education through your prayers and generosity. We have missed seeing you in person!

In this season of giving thanks, please praise the Lord for:

  • Providing for the College through nine months of COVID-19 operations.
  • Cooperation of faculty, staff, and students in making face-to-face education possible this fall.
  • Advancing the ministry of education pro Christo et patria during troubled times in our society.
Warmly in Christ,

Calvin L. Troup, PhD,
President

Is it Thanksgiving or Christmas?
It’s Thanksmas – and it’s Today!
We will celebrate Geneva’s Thanksmas, a celebration of Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled into one, on Friday, Nov. 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
A mix of virtual and in-person events for the Geneva community are scheduled throughout the day, including singing, cider, cocoa and donuts, giving thanks at Thanksmas, gingerbread house building and more. Any live events follow strict COVID-19 protocols regarding mask requirements, space and hand sanitizer. Care for our community!
Also, we will wear our favorite Thanksgiving or Christmas attire and join in the fun.

Calling December Grads!
Due to our condensed schedule, the December Graduation Reception will be a bit earlier this year, November 21. While we are honoring our graduates in November, the conferral date is actually December 19.

If your student is planning to graduate this December but did not receive an email from Cathy Schlachter in the past couple of weeks regarding the December Graduation event, please contact the Registrar’s office.

The South End of Campus Shines!
The south end of campus has undergone a number of improvements this year. With a new gate entrance, sidewalk, fencing and lighting, the area of the track and practice soccer field (Merriman Athletic Complex) is looking a bit different. The improvements are thanks to generous Geneva donors.

Check out the details below – and also view a time lapse video of the wind screen being put up on the stadium. We hope you enjoy the view for yourself soon!

Gold & White Alumni Referral Challenge Update
Geneva College President, Calvin L. Troup, PhD, announced a new Gold & White Challenge to encourage alumni referrals of new students. As part of the Challenge, he set the goal of 50 students referred through the Gold & White Program to apply to Geneva by Jan. 1, 2021. We are 62% of the way toward the goal. You can help by referring students to Geneva… and get an embossed Geneva Bible for your effort.

Military Surprise Send-Off
The Student Veterans Association and Military Enrollment Specialist Beth Wiruth organized send-off celebrations for Nursing major Corey White, Computer Science major Kayla Hubbs, and Master of Higher Ed student Patrick Kennedy as they deploy for military duty. With American flags, signs of support, and prayer, the Geneva community gathered to wish them well, commit them to the Lord's care, and assure them that Geneva would keep them in in thoughts and prayers during their time away.

Trapped in the Tower Room of McCartney Library!
It’s the first Digital Escape Room at McCartney Library – and you can join in the fun as a group or as individual. You can compete against friends and try it multiple times. Your answers are within the game, so keep your eyes open for potential clues.

This escape experience was created by Sarah McCraley, Manager of Circulation Services at Geneva College’s McCartney Library. Have fun... and we hope you can escape unscathed!
