Core Studies Department

Core Studies
Cultural Learning - Betty Douglas
Physical Education
Rooted in the Foundational Concepts of Christian Education, Geneva College’s core curriculum provides students with a foundation that promotes growth in knowledge, skills, understanding and attitude. The core is a vital part of a liberal arts education, giving students a Christ-centered perspective on the arts, sciences and humanities.

The Core Studies Department includes faculty members from a range of disciplines and departments who come together to teach the common core courses, which are required for all Geneva students. The parts of the core relate to each other in a network of intentional support, application, reinforcement and development. In a similar way, major programs and electives are designed to reinforce and build upon the skills, knowledge, and perspectives developed through the core.

Core Department Mission

The core exists to form students who have a Christian understanding of the nature of God, humanity and the world (cosmos) such that each student understands what it means to live out one’s life in all arenas in the presence of God and is capable of discerning the effects of sin on culture, society, and specific disciplines. It is in the core that students are encouraged to realize and embrace the Biblical concept of servanthood, and to recognize their calling as stewards of all that God has granted to their care: their personal lives, their dealings with others, and their treatment of the whole creation. In attitude, understanding, leading and serving, they should exhibit a commitment to honor God.
