The goals of the Community Development major are:

  1. To develop students who understand the uniqueness of the human person created in the image of God as the starting point for community development.
  2. To produce professionally excellent people to work various of public, non-profit or faith-based agencies or organizations.
  3. To root students in foundational theory as a basis for their personal philosophy and approach to community development. 
  4. To contribute to the ongoing revitalization of the region within which Geneva College is located.

The Community Development major has a direct connection to the flourishing Beaver Falls Community Development Corporation to accomplish these goals.

The learning objectives of the Community Development program are:

  1. Students will explore the nature of power in the social structure and understand how it can affect both individuals and communities.
  2. Students will commit to an approach that sees health as a long-term investment in a community as a way of nurturing their own well-being.
  3. Students will be able to appreciate the wide array of people and cultures that make communities rich in assets. 
  4. Students will address both the nature of the built environment and the centrality of social structures as foundational to the healthy functioning of a community.
  5. Students will be challenged to see communities differently as being places of assets and abundance and will celebrate and build from the richness present in the community. 

Career Outcomes

Graduates who aspire to have an impact in their communities and their careers through a Geneva Education gain expertise in this field enhanced by academics rooted in Christian values and ethics in Geneva’s program.
