I was frustrated with college near the end of my first semester at Geneva. The two classes that were specific to my major I was nearly failing. About two weeks before Thanksgiving, my mom called me to tell me that my family was moving cities again. I was stressed, exhausted, and didn’t know what I should be doing. The only class that I was excelling in was my humanities class taught by Dr. Robert Frazier.
As registration approached, Frazier mentioned that I should consider taking his class on C.S. Lewis next semester. I shrugged it off, knowing I would have a full schedule coming up. By the time registration rolled around, I found that I had a gap to take an extra class due to an opening in my schedule. I flipped through my options and ended up seeing the C.S. Lewis class listed with some spots still open. It did not take me long to decide that this was the class I would take. It was a Dr. Frazier class, and I liked his class before. How bad could it be?
On the first day, he went around and had each of us share our name and major with the class. When he reached me, I shared, “I’m a physics major at the present moment.” It was the first time I had really verbalized that I might not stick with my chosen course of study. From that moment on, I received nothing but support from my professors as I navigated discovering what the Lord had in store for me. A few months later, I declared my new double major in writing and philosophy.
At the start of the same semester, I started my first on-campus job in the marketing house. I have learned so much more about this school through being a social media intern. Not only do I know the foundations that we have laid for this school, but I also see them being put into practice in students' everyday lives. I have gotten to record countless interviews and conversations of my peers, and the things that they say are genuine. People here really do serve the Lord and love their education. This authenticity and intentionality sets Geneva apart from all the other colleges to which I applied. Geneva has exceeded my expectations and without it, I would not be where I am today with eyes open to the possibilities that the Lord has in store for me.
