Career Program Spotlight

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) industry is growing exponentially, and a Goldman Sachs report projects a $100 billion dollar market opportunity by 2020. As this growth continues, more opportunities for UAV, also known as drone, usage are available in private, commercial and governmental enterprises. That means the need for trained UAV pilots is growing as well.

To meet this workforce need, Geneva College offers a dual-degree program that enables students to a Bachelor′s degree in Business Administration from Geneva College and an Associate′s in Applied Science degree from the Community College of Beaver County (CCBC) in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

“The airline industry is in great need of skilled business people and conscientious leaders to serve the flying public,” says Dr. Denise Murphy-Gerber, Associate Professor in Geneva’s Business Department. “Great opportunities abound in this program for Geneva students, CCBC students and any prospective students interested in aviation in the growing fields of both private and commercial aviation and as a service to Christian missions.”

Students will gain extensive knowledge about a variety of practical uses for UAVs in this program. Among many other innovative abilities, UAVs can be used to spot, track and fight wildfires, closely monitor the development of hurricanes, fight crime, and transport merchandise.

Many employment opportunities exist with UAVs in both private and public entities including those with the U.S. Air Force, Federal Aviation Administration, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Entrepreneurial opportunities also exist with UAVs, and they cover a wide-range of topics and interests. They are especially important in the fields of photography and videography, as UAVs can be used to capture unique video footage and still shots previously difficult and expensive to acquire. These capabilities have benefits to numerous professions. To name a few, freelance journalists can report on news and capture video as it happens without having to use a secondary source; independent film makers can get more dramatic shots than with just a camera; and real estate agents can easily capture aerial footage of homes they are trying to sell. UAVs are providing people with new capabilities. The use of drones for visual inspection services of hard to reach places like buildings and bridges also present an opportunity. And as more people experiment and innovate, entrepreneurial opportunities with UAVs will continue to rise.

Geneva and CCBC′s professors have extensive backgrounds in their fields and prepare students for the expectations and demands that will face them upon graduation. CCBC offers the #1 aviation training program in the nation, and it is also one of the most affordable programs as well. In some cases it costs less than half of what other programs cost. At CCBC, students will use state-of-the-art facilities and training equipment to gain real-world experience while completing their degree.
