Making the Most of Summer

For many, summer goes by incredibly fast. So here are some ideas for making the most of what is left of summer.

  1. Have a Cookout with Family:

It can be easy to focus so much on the future and forget to cherish moments with family. During the summer many students can spend more time with family, so recognize this time as a gift, and plan a specific time to focus on family. Whether you have a small family or a big family, a cookout can be a nice way to make memories with them.

  1. Read a Book

During the school year it can be difficult to read for pleasure because your mind is so preoccupied with classes. During the summer your mind can relax so it can be much more enjoyable to read a book for pleasure. So, look over your TBR (to be read) list and see if any books catch your interest. Make the most of this break by reading something great!

  1. Connect with High School Friends

For incoming freshmen, it can be beneficial to intentionally hang out with high school friends before leaving for college. Once you get into the swing of things in college, it can be easy for high school friends to fade into the past, so be intentional with your time together. For returning college students, maybe take this time to reconnect with your friends from high school. Just because you may have grown apart doesn’t mean you can’t hang out again.

  1. Go on a Hike

Summer can be a great time to chill out and play video games or catch up on some Netflix, but summer is also a great time to explore nature. It could be valuable to go on a hike and appreciate the beauty of nature around you. While staying inside and enjoying the use of technology can be good, it can also be good to enjoy the benefits of the outdoors.

  1. Set Goals for the Upcoming School Year

During the summer, you have a chance to reflect on your past school year and consider ways that you wish to improve. It can be incredibly helpful to set specific goals that you wish to accomplish in the upcoming year. Whether your goal is to go to the gym three times a week, to get an A in your American History class, or to become president of the chemistry club, outlining your goals will make it easier to accomplish them.

  1. Clean Out Your Closet

Whether you are going into your freshman year or are a returning student, the summer can provide an opportunity to re-evaluate your wardrobe. Whether you have grown out of old clothes or have changed your style, there are likely to be clothes in your closet you no longer wear. Consider removing any clothes that you do not want and donating them to a thrift store or people in need. Shopping for new clothes is a fun experience, but often old clothes can be forgotten, so maybe take the time to clean out your closet.

There are many ways to spend your free time while you are not in school. Ultimately, you should try to spend time doing activities that are valuable to you and others, and those that bring you joy. There are many ways to make the most of summer, and these are just a few activities that you could try. Before you know it, classes will be starting up again, and your time will be spent on other activities, so try to be intentional with how you use your time during the summer.
