Higher Education

At Geneva College, there is a commitment to faith and life integration. Every major, every program, and every class are built around biblical teachings and they prepare students to hold tight to their faith throughout the course of their careers. But how does the study of business interact with a Christian worldview? A successful business relies on having hard deadlines, getting the most out of your employees, and making a profit, right? One might argue that there’s no room for a Christian perspective within a business, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Purposeful Learning

Within any area of business, you will be forced to problem-solve, communicate effectively, and think strategically. Geneva sets people up for success in these areas because they are dedicated to purposeful learning through their business classes. While studying business, a student is required to take a Strategic Management class where they are asked to run their own airline company and make a strategy for their business’s future. This gives students a chance to strategically step inside the inner workings of a business. They can see how the financials work alongside the marketing budget or how the employees of the business smoothly run operations. Strategic projects like this one business majors complete give them insight into the business world. Once students get hired, they are already able to problem-solve issues that arise and strategically plan which are highly sought-after business skills.

Kingdom Community

Geneva values their Kingdom Community which can be seen inside and outside of the classroom. One of the first classes a business major is required to take is Business Foundations, taught by Dr. Matthew Fuss. He specializes in human resources and quickly teaches his students a business is, “all about the people.” Employees are not an expense of a business but their greatest asset. People make or break a company, so it is important to treat them with kindness, respect, and love. Although issues may arise, it is important to show people grace within a company. For a business to succeed, the employees need to be treated like they are created in the image of God and loved by Him. Jesus first loved us, and we need to show others His love, especially in a business setting that can overlook the value of people.

Lifelong Mission

Geneva’s commitments propel a mission of faithful and fruitful service to God and neighbor. This is evident in the business program as the capstone course all business majors must take is Biblical Management & Business Ethics. This course looks at recent ethical issues that have occurred in business, such as the Enron scandal, to show why a biblical worldview within a business is so important. Cheating, lying, and stealing may put a business ahead in the short term, but once those actions come to light, the company will suffer the consequences. Geneva teaches its students that acting with integrity and being a servant leader is the only way a business will accomplish greatness. In fact, work should be considered a form of worship. Someone who holds a strong Christian worldview knows that going into the office every day is not as simple as it seems. Not only are they completing work that needs to be done but they are using the talents God has given them to help further His Kingdom.

Studying business at Geneva College will not only prepare you for your future career, it will also help form a strong Christian worldview which will be so beneficial in the business world. When you graduate with a business degree, you will have learned important business skills like accounting, digital marketing, business law, and more. However, more importantly, you will be able to make ethical, godly decisions that are so much more significant than reaching a deadline or making a profit. A Geneva College business degree will set you apart by mastering skills needed for business and taking the ethical standard to the highest degree. Learn to do business with excellence at Geneva.
