We are created in the image of a creator God. Is it any wonder that we have the innate ability to create? Just step back and watch children at play ... their imagination soars and anything is possible. Useless objects become things of great beauty and purpose. This is because children are divergent thinkers, enabling them to produce a wide range of thoughts and ideas. As adults, our frontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for problem-solving—becomes more rational, causing us to be more convergent in our thoughts.
Engineers are special. They have learned how to harness the power of divergent and convergent thinking, giving them the ability to explore creativity and find solutions to problems all at the same time. This is just one of the many skills engineers implement as they master a career they truly enjoy.
Perhaps you’ve thought about becoming an engineer. You may be asking yourself questions like, “Is engineering a good career path to pursue?” Or, “Why should I be an engineer?” Or, "Is engineering worth it?" These are all valid questions. Engineers Make a Difference
An engineering career path is one of the few professions that will enable you to truly impact the world around you. From the design of artificial intelligence to the design of vehicles for space exploration to the design of safety features for planes and cars, engineers are changing the world. If a problem needs to be addressed or an invention awaits creation, engineers are working on making it happen. All around you, you see the impact that engineers have had on the world.
Engineering is Rewarding, Challenging and Fun
Any job that allows you to change the world can be both difficult and challenging. Coming up with unique solutions to complex problems can also be fun and rewarding. As you overcome the myriad of problems associated with the job, you’ll also grow as an individual. The challenges you face will help you to gain knowledge and improve skills every single day.
Engineers are Paid to Be Creative and Innovative
As an engineer, you’ll be paid to design and create solutions. How fun is that? It’s almost like being paid to play. Whether you are trying to find a cure for cancer or trying to improve the function of an existing mechanism or you’re part of a team trying to design a settlement on Mars, engineering is a great profession where someone can be creative and innovative as they work on projects both large and small.
Engineering Never Gets Boring
Due to the diverse nature of most engineering projects, you’ll be faced with new challenges and unique situations on a regular basis. Oftentimes, you’ll find a need to develop and expand your skillset to meet the requirements of a particular project.
Many specific situations you encounter will be challenges that have never been faced before. Metaphorically, you may need to find a way to fit the square peg into the round hole. You may be given the opportunity to learn a new application or technique to solve the problem, developing an additional expertise that is also marketable.
Engineers Develop Transferable Skills
Speaking of developing marketable skills. Many of the skills you learn as an engineer will be useful and applicable in many other industries and professions, as well, and can be used as a steppingstone towards an entirely different career path. An engineering degree trains you in a variety of skills where you learn how to be a great manager, businessperson and entrepreneur. Because engineers are able to process big data and have a methodical approach to problem-solving, many financial industry businesses actually prefer to hire engineers.
Engineers are Rarely Bored
Because engineering requires creativity, engineers rarely find their job to be boring. Because creative problem-solving often takes engineers into uncharted territory, the challenges engineering professionals face can be fascinating, stretching you in ways you may never have expected.
Of course, on the rare occasion you do become bored, you’re likely to use your skills to develop something new and interesting to keep your mind occupied, like the incredible music machine.

For those individuals who make career determinations due to income, engineering majors can make a lot of money. In fact, engineering is one of the highest-paid career paths you can choose. Of course, some engineering sectors pay better than others. However, wherever engineering jobs are in demand, engineers can expect to make really good money.
