Is It Smart to Double Major?

When it’s time to choose a major in college, you’re not limited to just one. In fact, you can choose to do a double major instead. But should you do two majors? While it might seem hard to handle more than one major, there are several reasons to do so. The following are some of the top benefits of doing a double major in college. Keep these benefits in mind when you’re deciding whether to do one or two majors.

  1. More Bang for Your Buck

When you do a double major, you’ll be getting more for your money in college. While pursuing two majors might seem as though it would be more expensive, it can be done for the same or close to the same price. One way you save money, for example, is you won’t be paying double for expenses, such as on-campus housing, books, and meals, which would happen if you did a single major followed by another single major in college.

Doing two majors at once means you’ll be packing more knowledge into the years you spend in college, whether that’s two years for an associate degree or four years for a bachelor’s degree. When you graduate, you’ll have double the knowledge, experience, and skills than you would have with a single major. This alone can make double majors worth it.

  1. Stand Out in Your Field

Having a double major can help you stand out among the competition in your field. While many other people in your field might only have one major, you can show that you’ve worked and studied twice as hard to earn two majors. This can help you make a positive impression on prospective employers when you’re looking for a job after graduation.

When choosing your majors, think about picking two that will complement each other. For example, you might choose business administration as a major and combine it with communication or computer science as your second major. Gaining knowledge and building skills in both areas can set you apart in your field and make you a more valuable employee, since you’ll have more to offer compared to those with only one major.

  1. Opportunities to Learn More

Double majors provide you with a chance to learn more than you would with a single major. While you might learn a bit more with a single major through electives, a double major provides much more knowledge. When you do a double major, you’ll be taking several courses in two different areas. Each major will provide you with a chance to develop new skills and explore new concepts and other material related to that area of study.

On the other hand, you could choose two majors that are completely unrelated. You might do so if you have a strong interest in learning about a particular subject, even if you have no plans to make that subject or field your career choice. You can choose one major for your career and pick another major based on your personal interests and hobbies. For example, you might choose a nursing or engineering major for your career and a music or language major for your interests.

  1. Creates Additional Career Opportunities

Having two majors can lead to more career opportunities. In some cases, you might find more advanced job opportunities or opportunities that require a wider range of knowledge and skills than a single major provides. For example, having a computer science major and a business administration major means you can look for job opportunities that require skills and knowledge in business and technology.

With a double major, you might also find it easier to switch careers if desired. If you’re having trouble finding suitable job opportunities in one field, you’ll be able to explore job opportunities in your other field. This can help ensure that you have plenty of job opportunities to consider. Your double major can also make it easier to change career paths later if your interests evolve.

  1. It’s More Doable Than You Might Think

Earning a double major might seem tough, but it may not be as difficult as you might expect. Although you’ll be studying different subject matter in two fields, you can make this easier to handle with good study habits and time management skills. Keeping track of assignments, exams, and projects for each major can help you stay on top of your schedule and complete all of your work on time. Developing good study habits, such as setting aside study time every day, can also help.

Keep in mind that some options can make double majors even more doable, such as online programs. When you’re studying both majors online, you don’t have to spend time traveling to and from each class. Instead, you can attend classes virtually or watch recordings of lectures on your own time. This option can provide you with more time to focus on both majors.

  1. Earn a Sense of Accomplishment and Satisfaction

When you choose to do a double major, you can end up with stronger self-confidence. Studying two majors can give you a sense of accomplishment that can boost your self-esteem and help you feel more confident about building your career using the knowledge and skills you’ve gained. Double majors can also provide you with a sense of satisfaction that you were able to successfully handle the challenges inherent in studying two different fields.
