Biblical Studies, Ministries & Philosophy

The Biblical Studies, Ministries & Philosophy department teaches from a redemptive-historical perspective, in which both the Old Testament and the New Testament are seen as the progressive unfolding of God′s redemptive plan, culminating in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Additionally, Bible department faculty members highlight three areas of growth and development for students:

Applied Mathematics Information
  • Meet Our Faculty
Discover The Holy Land

  • Scholarship – Students will be challenged to engage the course material, develop the skills to   analyze it at a high level, and evaluate it critically.  Various perspectives will often be studied, which will challenge students to understand the world outside of the reformed movement, yet in a safe place where historic orthodox views are held with deep conviction.
  • Spiritual formation – Students will be challenged to love Jesus Christ as Savior and King even more, to embrace the authority of Scripture with more fervency, and to develop the various spiritual disciplines that, through the Holy Spirit, empower one for ministry.
  • Practical ministry – Students will be challenged to develop their practical ministry skills.  Each course, from The Gospel of John to Augustine, will attempt to demonstrate how a study of the Biblical text or a hero of the faith or an ancient philosopher relates to some aspect of practical ministry.

2020 Dr. Byron I. Bitar Memorial Lectures - The Philosophical Life: Celebrating a Legacy
BITAR LECTURE SERIES 2020 Dr. Byron I. Bitar Memorial Lectures - The Philosophical Life: Celebrating a Legacy

This event will not be held at this time due to concerns about the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Celebrated Christian author G.K. Chesterton wrote: “This at least seems to me the main problem: How can we contrive to be at once astonished at the world and yet at home in it?” The philosophical life consists in a posture of wonder toward the world, expressed in fundamental questions about being, doing, knowing, and humanness. To be human is to philosophize. To presume that one can opt out is to deny one’s own humanness. Christian believers particularly seek the love of wisdom (philosophy) as the love of God.

YayEmma I have a lot of favorites, but here’s a shoutout to Dr. Watt. He shared so much wisdom with me over my four years, including his opinion on pie. (He was a pie baking contest judge for an event I organized as an RA in Clarke.)

YayHeather "Dr. Curtis for challenging me in my Hebrew language acquisition and for teaching me the rich history of the early church while crafting my essay skills, even if we didn't always agree on a final point."

YayHeather “Dr. Scott and Wendy Shidemantle invited me to stay in their home when I had a rough time at home and I was a tenant in their apartment during a summer vacation. I didn't realize how much they both gave me until years later when I excitedly told Wendy about my first pregnancy. They weren't just teachers, but fellow life livers, if that makes sense. I loved my time at Geneva, I have pretty much all I do now because of my time there.”

Who is your favorite professor and why?

YayHeather “Dr. Scott Shidemantle taught me, as a baby Christian, how to exegete scripture and how to apply it to life. It opened up a world to me that I hadn't been a part of before. We sat at lunch after my first day in his ‘John’ class while I cried because I didn't think I could do it and I had never truly read the Bible before. He was very calm in the face of my 20-year-old hysterics and assured me that I could. And I did (A- y'all).”

Esther L. Meek

Who is your favorite professor and why?

YayMichael I’m too stubborn of a Communication major to be lured into picking *a* favorite, but I just finished ether Meek’s book “Longing to Know” this morning, and it reminded me that many Geneva profs have incredible talents that go far beyond the classroom! Dr. Meek writes as wonderfully as she teaches. It was a privilege to work with her as a TA in Geneva’s Humanities 303 core class.

YayAbi I have a hard time picking a favorite for sure. I think Dr. Meek, Dr. Frazier, Dr. Talbert, Dr. Ward, Dr. Watt, and Professor Schindel have been consistently challenging me not only in the classroom, but also outside. They are there to pray for me and encourage me whenever I need it and consistently check on me to see how I’m doing. That truly made me feel like I was at home especially being so far from my family.

YayBetsy Terry Thomas. He is our stand up comedian at Geneva college. He really helped me out at Geneva College when I took his Bible class. His Reformation parties are the best. Don’t miss out. He’s very kind and understanding and such a great person to be around. He’s a great story teller too. I love you Terry Thomas.
