Online vs On Campus Info for International Students

Geneva College offers a mix of online and classroom based courses and programs. As an international student, it is important to have an understanding of what is required of you when attending classes at an American university.

International students studying in America attend on a non-immigrant visa called an F-1 visa. One of the requirements for this visa is that the student is attending classes on campus and not online as a majority. If you are interested in completing your Master’s degree fully online, please be aware that you will not receive a student visa to enter the United States. If you plan to attend classes on campus, however, you are eligible to apply for an F-1 student visa.

Geneva College currently offers the following programs:

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA), Online or On Campus
  • M.A. in Counseling, On Campus Only
  • M.A. in Higher Education, On Campus Only
  • M.S. in Leadership Studies (MSLS), Online Only

Accepted into an on campus program? Your next steps:

Geneva College is certified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS’s) Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and is authorized under federal law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students. For all immigration paperwork and questions as you prepare to apply for a student visa, you will need to work with our International Admissions Counselor in Global Student Services at Geneva College.

Assuming you have been accepted into an on campus program at Geneva College, you will need to follow these steps before arriving in the United States:

  1. Get a Form I-20. To receive a Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Status”, you will need to provide evidence of financial support and supporting documents. After providing these documents, Sarah in Global Student Services can send you the Form I-20. Required documents:
    • Financial Affidavit. This form must be submitted with supporting bank documents or letters from all sources of support for your time in the United States (i.e. bank statements, letters, investment account statements, etc.). You are required to prove funding for at least the first full year of school – this should include all tuition and fees, as well as housing and food costs for the full year. If you have not yet received the form, please contact Sarah so you have the correct form for your specific program.
    • Mandatory Information Form. This form is used by Global Student Services to complete your Form I-20 and does not need any supporting documents. You can scan and email the completed form to Sarah Murison.
      • Mandatory Information Form (.PDF)
    • Scanned copy of your passport picture/information page. A scanned copy of your passport information page is needed to complete the Form I-20. You can email that to Sarah when you email her the Mandatory Information Form.
  1. Pay the I-901 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) Fee. All international students must pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee. You can pay your fee at www.fmjfee.com. For more information, view the  Form I-901 Fee Payment tutorial.
  2. Apply for a visa to travel to the United States. You can apply for a visa to travel to the United States at your designated U.S. embassy or consulate. Make sure you bring all  required documents with you.

*Please keep in mind: Geneva College does not guarantee that you will be issued a student visa to study in the United States. Assuming required documents are submitted, we can only issue you a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20) with which you can apply for the visa.

Housing and Living Services for Graduate Students at Geneva College

Geneva College does not provide any graduate housing for their students. The graduate students, both American citizens and international, are expected to find off campus housing on their own. We understand that as an international this can be difficult, but be aware that it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to secure housing. We can give you only limited assistance.
